About The Position

As a Service Retrofit Controls Technician IV, you'll serve as a master-level trade leader and senior field expert in commercial building automation and controls retrofit, partnering closely with General Foremen, Superintendents, and Project Managers to develop detailed retrofit plans, resolve complex challenges proactively, and oversee high-profile system integrations, programming, commissioning, and optimization nationwide. With full mastery of DDC/BAS platforms, sequences of operation, and advanced troubleshooting, you'll lead crews on major retrofit jobs, ensure exceptional safety/quality/client satisfaction, mentor the team, and drive operational efficiency for smarter, more sustainable building performance. Our people-first culture celebrates your expertise with advanced leadership opportunities, specialized training, recognition for mentoring excellence, and the profound satisfaction of guiding high-performing teams that deliver outstanding service coast-to-coast.

Requirements

  • Experience: 5+ years (typically 8–10+ years preferred) in commercial building automation/controls installation, startup, retrofit, and service with full mastery of all technical aspects; proven experience leading crews, planning execution, and managing complex jobs.
  • Education: High school diploma or GED required; associate degree, trade school certificate, or technical training in HVAC, controls, electronics, or related field strongly preferred.
  • Certifications/Licenses: Valid driver's license and clean driving record required; advanced controls certifications (e.g., Niagara/Tridium, BACnet, or manufacturer-specific) strongly preferred; OSHA 30-hour certification encouraged (company support provided).
  • Physical Demands: Ability to regularly lift and carry up to 50 lbs, climb ladders/scaffolding/stairs, work in confined spaces or at heights, bend/kneel/crouch, reach overhead, and use tools/equipment for extended periods; frequent standing, walking, manual dexterity, and physical stamina required to handle high-stress, fast-paced environments.
  • Work Environment/Safety: Primarily field-based in commercial/industrial settings (indoor/outdoor, rooftops, mechanical rooms, varying weather); exposure to noise, dust, heights, electrical hazards, and extreme temperatures; must strictly adhere to OSHA regulations, conduct hazard identification, and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, harnesses, and steel-toed boots at all times—safety is our top priority and non-negotiable. This is a safety-sensitive position. Frequent regional travel within assigned market, on-call rotations, and flexible hours (including evenings/weekends/emergencies) may be required as business needs dictate.
  • Mastery-level diagnostics/troubleshooting across commercial controls/BAS equipment (DDC, sensors/actuators, controllers, integration with HVAC).
  • Advanced programming, startup/commissioning, system integration, functional testing, and retrofit execution.
  • Proficiency with controls platforms (BACnet, LON, Tridium/Niagara, Johnson Controls, Siemens, Honeywell) and diagnostic tools.
  • Crew leadership, task delegation, mentoring/training, performance monitoring.
  • Excellent written/verbal communication, reporting/documentation, negotiation, and follow-through with customers, management, inspectors, and stakeholders.
  • Safety leadership (OSHA 30-hour preferred), decision-making under pressure, professionalism, and self-motivation.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate directly with General Foreman, Superintendent, and Project Manager to develop retrofit/service plans, labor/material requirements, sequencing, and risk assessments for complex controls retrofits and integrations.
  • Perform detailed field surveys, condition assessments, and takeoffs; report findings in writing and recommend proactive solutions to prevent issues from escalating.
  • Plan, coordinate, and supervise on-site retrofit functions including scheduling, material control, tool/equipment management, subcontractor coordination, and daily crew assignments.
  • Oversee and direct controls technician crews daily: delegate tasks based on capabilities, monitor progress, provide daily completion percentages, and prepare weekly reports (safety/toolbox, production, preconstruction, project-specific).
  • Conduct thorough jobsite inspections to ensure compliance with codes, manufacturer specifications, Modigent standards, and client requirements; lead system startups, functional testing, programming adjustments, commissioning, and closeout coordination with engineers, subcontractors, owners, and vendors.
  • Assure full adherence to safety protocols across the crew: lead hazard assessments, enforce PPE usage, document incidents, notify leadership, and implement corrective actions immediately.
  • Train and mentor new and existing technicians on latest controls platforms (e.g., BACnet, LON, Tridium/Niagara, Johnson Controls, Siemens, Honeywell), retrofit techniques, safety standards, and quality workmanship to maintain peak performance and continuous improvement.
  • Troubleshoot escalated technical issues, customer concerns, and field conflicts; make decisions that support project success, profitability, and client satisfaction.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation based on experience and level, with opportunities for performance incentives and tool allowances where applicable.
