About The Position

Copperweld is looking for a driven, dedicated Controls Engineer Technician to support the development, troubleshooting, and maintenance of control systems within our manufacturing operations. This role is ideal for a recent graduate or early-career engineer eager to grow their technical skills and contribute to automation and equipment reliability in a dynamic industrial environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related field OR Associate’s degree in Applied Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field with 5+ years’ experience in the electrical and controls field is required.
  • Relevant experience, including internships or co-op placements in controls, automation, or related engineering environments
  • Familiarity with PLC programming, especially Allen-Bradley/Rockwell systems, HMI development, or other industrial automation technologies
  • Basic understanding of: Electrical systems and components Motor controls and variable frequency drives (VFDs) Industrial sensors and instrumentation
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and wiring diagrams
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a hands-on approach to troubleshooting
  • Demonstrated willingness to learn, ask questions, and grow in a fast-paced technical environment
  • Effective communication skills and ability to collaborate within cross-functional teams
  • Knowledge of safety and electrical codes (e.g., NEC, NFPA 70E) is a plus, but not required

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the programming and troubleshooting of PLCs, HMIs, and control systems used in manufacturing
  • Support control system upgrades and help implement automation improvements on production equipment
  • Participate in the installation and commissioning of new machinery and control hardware
  • Help diagnose issues related to machine controls, sensors, drives, and safety systems with guidance from senior engineers
  • Work with Maintenance, Engineering, and Operations teams to reduce downtime and improve process stability
  • Assist with developing and updating electrical schematics and system documentation
  • Ensure work aligns with safety, quality, and compliance standards
  • Learn and apply best practices in control system design and troubleshooting
  • Engage with vendors and technical support when needed
  • Stay open to learning new control technologies and industry trends
  • Perform other duties as assigned
