This role is part of the Blue Origin Engines business unit, where our focus is the design, development, manufacturing, and testing of engines and propulsion systems. Built for multiple uses, our family of engines is powering the next generation of rockets for commercial, civil, national security, and human spaceflight. The Controls Branch Lead is responsible for leading and managing the design, development, and implementation of control systems. This position will include accountability and oversight of technical design from initial conceptual design to final product certification, cost, schedule, risk management and personnel management. The Controls Branch Lead will also be responsible for working with the functional groups throughout Blue Origin including coordinating and facilitating support from EPM, TFO, and other organizations within the company in support of hardware design and development activities. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and attention towards safe and reliable spaceflight.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience managing technical teams and/or leading functional groups with responsibility for leading and coaching employees.
  • Strong technical knowledge of control systems, including hardware, firmware, and software design, system integration, and certification processes.
  • Proven leadership skills, including experience managing direct reports and mentoring technical teams.
  • Strong project management skills, including experience with project planning, budgeting, and risk management.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience leading technical teams developing power electronics and motor controls
  • Experience in all aspects of hardware design cycle (schematics, PWB layout, part selection, firmware design, acceptance/qualification tests)
  • Expertise in complex mixed signal circuit design and firmware design
  • Experience with control loop analysis and firmware implementation

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the design and development of control systems for Blue's aerospace products.
  • Ensure the timely delivery of control system designs that meet our requirements, performance specifications, and cost targets.
  • Manage the control system design team, including staffing, training, performance evaluation, and workload allocation.
  • Ensure the design and development of avionics control systems conform to all applicable industry standards and regulations.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with key stakeholders, including Program, Project, Leadership, suppliers, other internal departments.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate control systems with other spacecraft systems, such as electro-mechanical, fluids, etc.
  • Manage the control system certification process, including the coordination of testing, documentation, and certification reports.
  • Recruit, hire, manage, and mentor a team
  • Stay current on industry trends, technologies, and regulations related to avionics control systems.
  • Embody, promote, and coach the Blue Origin leadership principles
