About The Position

This job description is designed for a Corporate Controller at a $200M revenue, high-growth e-commerce company in Memphis, TN, emphasizing technical accounting, inventory management, e-commerce systems (NetSuite/Shopify), and strategic financial reporting. Job Summary The Controller will own the full accounting function, including general ledger, monthly close, technical accounting, and internal controls. This person will lead a growing accounting team, optimize financial systems (NetSuite), and ensure accurate inventory and revenue recognition for a complex, multi-channel ($200M+) e-commerce operation. Reporting to the CFO, the Controller will provide actionable insights to executive leadership and other financial stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Experience: 10-15 years of professional accounting experience, with at least 5+ years in a previous Controller role.
  • Industry Expertise: Experience in e-commerce, retail, or consumer goods is highly preferred, specifically with high-volume transactional data.
  • Technical Proficiency: Advanced knowledge of US GAAP. Strong experience with ERP systems (NetSuite preferred) and Excel. Working knowledge of ASC842 Lease accounting, P&C insurance, CapEx tracking, etc.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • Certification: CPA (Certified Public Accountant) is strongly preferred.
  • Analytical Rigor: Ability to analyze accounting issues and provide practical solutions.
  • Process Improvement: Proven track record of improving financial systems and automating processes to scale with revenue growth. This includes incorporating AI into day-to-day accounting responsibilities.
  • Strategic Thinking: Ability to partner with the CFO on cash flow management, budgeting, and forecasting.
  • Leadership & Communication: Ability to translate complex data into clear insights for non-financial stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Accounting Operations & Closing: Lead a disciplined, high-accuracy monthly, quarterly, and annual close process. Own the general ledger, banking, AP/AR, and payroll.
  • Inventory & COGS Management: Oversee complex inventory accounting, including inventory in transit and finished goods across multiple warehouse locations.
  • Revenue Recognition: Manage revenue recognition for online sales, ensuring compliance with GAAP, particularly regarding sales tax reporting, returns, and refunds.
  • Systems Implementation & Optimization: Lead or maintain ERP systems and integration with e-commerce platforms (Shopify, Amazon, and other third-party platforms).
  • Financial Reporting & Controls: Prepare GAAP financial statements, Board packages, and lender reporting. Establish scalable internal controls and policies.
  • Audit & Tax Compliance: Serve as the primary contact for external auditors and tax advisors.
  • Team Leadership: Build, mentor, and scale the accounting team.
