About The Position

The Controller is responsible for overseeing the organization’s accounting operations, financial reporting, internal controls, and compliance. This role provides hands-on execution of core accounting functions while serving as a strategic partner to management by delivering accurate financial insights, supporting budgeting and forecasting, and driving continuous improvement of departmental systems, policies, and processes. The Controller ensures timely and accurate financial close, regulatory compliance, and audit readiness, while developing the accounting team and supporting organizational growth and strategic planning.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration required
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including supervisory responsibility
  • Working knowledge of GAAP, tax regulations, and financial reporting standards
  • Relevant full cycle accounting experience in a project based professional services company, construction, architecture, engineering or similar.
  • Strong financial analysis and reporting experience
  • Proficiency with accounting systems (e.g., QuickBooks Online or similar ERP)
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel; strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience with payroll systems, budgeting tools, and reporting platforms
  • Ability to evaluate and implement new accounting systems and tools

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) strongly preferred

Responsibilities

  • Execute daily accounting operations including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and job costing
  • Assist with preparation and review chart of account reconciliations, draft general ledger journals and trial balances to maintain accurate books
  • Manage accurate and timely period end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes
  • Ensure proper capitalization, expense compliance, and adherence to internal control policies and industry best practices.
  • Monitor receivables and credit risk, book deposits, and follow-up on outstanding accounts.
  • Manage vendors with cost control measures, issue Purchase Orders, verify invoices, perform cycle auditing
  • Prepare and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, cash flow reports, project cost reporting, budget actuals, and variance analyses
  • Analyze and interpret financial and operating data for management and leadership decision-making
  • Develop and maintain variance reporting comparing departmental budgets to actual results
  • Support cash flow analysis, tracking, forecasting, and reporting to management
  • Produce financial reports, summaries, and analyses for executives, treasurer, and other stakeholders
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, payroll reporting, and property tax requirements
  • Coordinate annual external audits and preparation of tax filings and supporting documentation
  • Support adoption of new accounting standards by researching requirements, drafting accounting policies, and preparing required disclosures
  • Review financial data for accuracy and identify issues impacting operational effectiveness
  • Evaluate and enhance accounting systems, policies, procedures, and internal controls
  • Direct budget preparation, review budget proposals, and prepare supporting documentation and justifications
  • Provide leadership with timely insight into the organization’s financial position, performance, and risks
  • Assist with company strategic planning, financial modeling, and special projects
  • Support cost-saving initiatives and profitability improvements
  • Lead, train, and develop accounting staff; identify training needs and oversee development programs
  • Manage workload effectively, set expectations, and provide ongoing performance feedback
  • Foster a culture of accountability, accuracy, collaboration, and continuous improvement
