About The Position

Kramer Tree Specialists is a family-owned business operating throughout the Chicago area for over 45 years, focusing on safe, sustainable, and innovative strategies for tree maintenance and management. This is a unique opportunity for the first Controller to join the team and help a rapidly growing organization. The position involves handling financial and accounting operations, being a strategic thinker with an entrepreneurial spirit and a growth mindset. The $8 million business comprises 3 entities, and the Controller will assist in developing real-time job costing, implementing an accounting system conversion, and developing reporting to support strong financial controls and decision-making. The offices are conveniently located in the western Chicago suburbs near Wheaton, Winfield, and St. Charles, easily accessible from the I-355 and I-88 interchange. This role is ideal for an individual seeking a strategic and analytical environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
  • 5+ years’ of experience in a Controller position
  • Expert knowledge of QuickBooks Online and experience migrating data and processes to a new accounting software
  • Experience managing certified payroll processes required
  • In-depth experience and knowledge of accounting principles/theories (GAAP, FASB)
  • Proficiency in Excel and intermediate to advance experience with Word and similar programs
  • Expert-level knowledge integrating multiple systems and reporting tools
  • Knowledge and experience with integrated accounting systems

Nice To Haves

  • Masters degree preferred
  • Experience in the landscape, construction or other trade industries a strong plus

Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain a job costing accounting system to better understand profitability
  • Lead the transition from Quickbooks Desktop to our next accounting software from selection to implementation
  • Develop budgets, cashflow analysis and other financial reporting
  • Analyzing and interpreting financial reports to understand trends in profitability, performance against budget and other key measures of the financial health of the organization
  • Recommending changes to organization processes and strategy to improve financial results
  • Identifying opportunities to improve the accounting practices, internal controls, and processes
  • Interpreting and leveraging data to drive business decisions
  • Overseeing A/R, A/P and Accounting Specialists in the completion of daily accounting activities
