About The Position

Our client, a family-owned and operated commercial construction company ($80M–$100M annual revenue), is seeking an experienced Controller to lead their accounting and financial operations. This is a hands-on leadership role overseeing a 7-person accounting team and partnering closely with ownership, operations, and external stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field, or 15–20+ years of construction finance experience
  • 10+ years of accounting/finance experience in the construction industry (commercial preferred)
  • Strong knowledge of job cost accounting, WIP, certified payroll, and construction billing
  • Union construction experience and understanding of union requirements
  • Familiarity with construction liens, tax compliance, and insurance
  • Experience supporting companies with $50M–$100M in annual revenue
  • Proven leadership and people-management experience
  • Strong accounting, analytical, and organizational skills

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a 7-person accounting and finance team
  • Oversee all financial operations, reporting, and compliance
  • Manage company-wide cash flow, forecasting, and liquidity
  • Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
  • Oversee job cost accounting, WIP reporting, and project profitability
  • Manage billing, accounts receivable, collections, and certified payroll
  • Perform financial analysis and year-end profitability reviews
  • Manage insurance audits, union audits, and commercial insurance renewals
  • Oversee accounting for 7–8 entities (LLCs and trusts), including business and personal-related entities
  • Coordinate tax preparation and reviews with external tax accountants
  • Maintain relationships with banks, unions, insurers, and external advisors
  • Support employee reviews, bonus preparation, and oversight of benefit plans
  • Maintain familiarity with 401(k) (Roth and non-Roth) and deferred compensation plans
  • Utilize construction accounting software (Plexxis strongly preferred; On-Screen Takeoff/Quick Bid a plus)
