A prominent leader in the Michigan sales industry is seeking a motivated and skilled candidate for the position of Controller. In this critical role, you will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of financial reporting. The Controller will oversee and manage the company's accounting operations, ensuring compliance and optimizing financial processes. This position requires strategic oversight, operational expertise, and the ability to cultivate a high-performing accounting team. As the Controller, you will lead and supervise the Accounting Department, which encompasses accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and bank and credit card reconciliations. You will oversee overall financial reporting, maintain the business chart of accounts, and keep the General Ledger in good order for the organization and its related companies. Additionally, you will ensure compliance with all tobacco reporting regulations and laws in collaboration with regulatory counsel, including PACT Act, ENDS, and OTP tax and reporting obligations. Supporting all internal bank compliance and covenant obligations will also be part of your responsibilities, including facilitating the annual reviewed financial (GAAP) statement and tax obligations in conjunction with our external CPA firm requirements. You will maintain and perform all human resources oversight, including health insurance, 401(k), ACA, unemployment compliance, audit, testing, and review. Furthermore, you will oversee, maintain, and renew all federal, state, and local license requirements, as well as corporate insurance policies. Developing, maintaining, and organizing electronic source documents and retention policies will also be essential in this role. In terms of communication, you will manage and organize all accounting-related email communications, ensuring timely responses and documentation. You will schedule and coordinate meetings, calls, and emails as needed for accounting and financial operations, collaborating with internal departments, vendors, customers, and external professionals to address accounting matters. Regular meetings with the executive team and top leadership will be scheduled to discuss overall objectives and provide reporting insights. Your financial and accounting oversight will include reconciling all company bank accounts, monitoring and maintaining the chart of accounts, general ledger, and accounting software (QuickBooks), and ensuring state tobacco compliance and accounts are up-to-date. You will supervise the accounting team, review their work, provide guidance, and correct errors as necessary. Additionally, you will verify the accuracy of vendor invoices and purchase orders, review and approve all expenses and payments, and continuously monitor payables, receivables, and overall expenses to ensure financial efficiency. In terms of tax and compliance, you will prepare workpapers for the annual tax filings in support of the outside CPA, manage and ensure timely payment of quarterly Flow-Through-Entity taxes, and oversee the preparation and submission of tobacco-related tax compliance. You will also ensure compliance with all human resources-related regulations, including ACA, health insurance, 401(k), unemployment, and workers' compensation. Your role will also involve compiling and preparing workpapers for outside CPA-reviewed financial statements, conducting insurance audits, reconciling quarterly State of Michigan Unemployment Agency reports, and auditing credit card bills, payroll, health insurance, and other financial transactions. You will stay informed about new investments, document and file investment paperwork, and communicate updates to principals, while also tracking interest earned on various bank accounts and managing related financial records. Regular meetings with company principals and accountants will be held to review financials and provide insights. Administrative duties will include renewing all necessary licenses and insurance policies, completing annual government censuses and other required reports, and maintaining an organized filing system for financial documents. You will also perform other duties as assigned by the President and Vice President and adapt your work schedule as needed to meet the demands of the business.
