About The Position

The Controller at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary is a pivotal role responsible for ensuring the integrity and accuracy of the Seminary's general ledger and both internal and external financial reporting. This position oversees critical functions including accounts receivable, accounts payable, cash management, endowment accounting, grant accounting, payroll processing, and fixed assets accounting. Additionally, the Controller facilitates the budgeting process, ensuring that financial operations align with the Seminary's strategic goals. The role requires interaction with all levels of management and staff, emphasizing the importance of effective communication and collaboration to support the Seminary's objectives. The Controller will manage a team that includes the Senior Accountant, the Bursar, and the Accounts Payable Staff Accountant. This leadership position reports directly to the Vice President for Finance and Operations/Chief Financial Officer. The Controller is expected to maintain a high level of professionalism and integrity, developing credibility throughout the organization and with external stakeholders. The role also involves the preparation of timely and accurate financial statements, management of the Seminary's chart of accounts, and coordination of the annual external financial audit, including Single Audits related to Title IV funding. In addition to these responsibilities, the Controller will implement and maintain sound internal control procedures, facilitate the annual budgeting process, and develop policies for effective requisition, reporting, budgeting, and forecasting of capital appropriations. The position requires a commitment to continuous learning and improvement in accounting practices and software, as well as training staff in these areas. The Controller will also be responsible for ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local financial reporting requirements, as well as maintaining records for federally required Direct Loan and Federal Work Study programs.
