About The Position

If so, we’d like to talk with you about growing with us. We’re hiring a full‑time Construction Safety Officer to support one of our client sites. This is a 4‑month contract with opportunities for extension and potential full‑time hire by the client. The Safety Officer is responsible for overseeing all safety and health activities for construction work occurring at Fire Station 303 and the Canine (K9) Office Facility. This role ensures full compliance with MWAA safety requirements, OSHA/VOSH regulations, and site-specific protocols—particularly within occupied, operational, and secure airport environments. You will lead the development, implementation, and enforcement of robust safety programs to protect workers, airport personnel, and the public.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience as a Safety Officer, Safety Manager, or similar role within construction.
  • Extensive knowledge of OSHA 1910/1926, VOSH, and modern construction safety practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct hazard assessments, create JHAs, and lead incident investigations.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to enforce safety standards and influence safe behavior across teams.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with contractors, subcontractors, and airport personnel.

Nice To Haves

  • Relevant certifications: OSHA 30 CHST, STSC, CSP, or equivalent
  • Experience working in occupied facilities and/or secure airport environments.

Responsibilities

  • Regulatory Compliance & Safety Leadership Promote and maintain full compliance with MWAA’s Construction Safety Manual, OSHA 29 CFR 1910 & 1926, and Virginia VOSH regulations.
  • Develop, implement, and enforce a comprehensive Site-Specific Safety & Health Plan (SSSP).
  • Prepare, maintain, and update Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) for all major work activities.
  • Conduct frequent site inspections, safety audits, and compliance reviews for contractors and subcontractors.
  • Oversee subcontractor safety performance to ensure alignment with project and regulatory standards.
  • Lead and document weekly safety meetings, toolbox talks, and safety briefings.
  • Incident Prevention & Response Investigate and document incidents, near misses, unsafe conditions, and implement corrective actions.
  • Maintain detailed safety records, logs, and reports in accordance with company and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain timely communication of hazards, procedural changes, and safety expectations to the project team.
  • Project-Specific Safety Oversight Fire Station & Interior Renovation Work Monitor safety during selective interior demolition and phased renovation activities.
  • Oversee safe execution of: Laundry and restroom conversions and upgrades Installation of ADA‑compliant showers and plumbing systems New flooring, ceilings, wall systems, and interior finishes Mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection work Coordinate safety controls necessary to maintain continuous operation of the fire station during construction.
  • K9 Facility & Structural Upgrades Manage safety for construction of new exterior canopies, including concrete foundations, structural steel framing, and metal roofing.
  • Oversee safety during interior renovations of exam rooms, multi-purpose spaces, locker rooms, and related areas.
  • Provide safety oversight for construction of a structural addition to the men’s locker room.
  • Promote hazard prevention and controlled access within unoccupied work zones.
  • Airport Environment Safety & Security Maintain strict compliance with: MWAA security protocols Worker badging and credentialing requirements Controlled access procedures for secure and operational airport zones Coordinate closely with Airport Operations regarding work impacting active airfield or occupied facilities.
  • Maintain heightened awareness of operational impacts, site logistics, and required emergency response procedures unique to an airport environment.
