About The Position

As a Journey Level Operator in Marine Maintenance (MM) you will execute a wide variety of manual labor and equipment operations as directed by a Crew Chief, ensuring all assigned field activities are completed safely and efficiently. In this position, you will be responsible for a diverse set of duties, working either independently or alongside a crew to support all business groups within the Port of Seattle’s Maritime Division. Primary responsibilities include equipment operation, equipment inspections, and related manual labor. You will operate various pieces of equipment as part of planned construction projects, supporting a maintenance task or assisting with exploratory tasks in response to a specific event. You will operate various pieces of equipment to inspect, assess, repair, and replace irrigation, sewer, drainage, hydrant, and similar systems. You will excavate, break & remove paving and concrete, prepare earth for foundations, stairs, operate a telescopic handler forklift, loader, backhoe, skid steer, roller, etc. in support of maintenance and construction operations. You will communicate with supervisors, other departments, property tenants, contractors, public, and other individuals to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, resolve problems, or give, receive advice or direction. You will maintain a safe work area for the work crew and public, to include but not limited to cones, barricades, and warning devices that directs traffic at work sites. You will be expected to comply with all Port of Seattle rules, policies, and construction safety regulations, in addition to the MM work rules. You will perform all journey-level Operator work activities and work effectively from technical drawings. You will use a cell phone, email, and job tracking system to receive notifications of new work orders and/or requests and documenting your daily work activities.

Requirements

  • Experienced – You have five (5) years of recent experience in both operating heavy construction equipment, vehicles, and various tools, or you have completed an Operator apprenticeship program or equivalent. Your five (5) years of recent experience with heavy construction equipment and vehicles include Backhoes, Excavators, Forklifts, Reach-Alls, Skid Steers, and Loaders.
  • Educated – You possess a High School diploma or GED equivalent.

  • Knowledgeable – You have a strong technical and mechanical knowledge with a variety of tools and equipment. You are familiar with all work-related safety codes, regulations, and requirements, can work at heights, over water, and in confined spaces, and can properly use rigging, personal safety equipment, and industry required tools. You have knowledge of construction means, methods and practices of respective trade and you have followed plans and drawings to guide the work you perform.
  • Communication - You have excellent communication with the public and employees from a diverse background.
  • Customer Service – You deliver excellent service under pressure during stressful/emergency situations.

  • You are a Certified Erosion and Sediment Control Lead (CESCL).
  • You have experience managing and documenting BMP’s.
  • You have completed HAZWOPPER training.
  • You are OSHA 30 certified.
  • You know how to use a smartphone for communication, email, texting, photos, Microsoft Teams, google maps, and for research.
  • You are comfortable using a computer for email and for looking things up.
