About The Position

The Construction Engineer Associate l will perform basic engineering duties associated with the construction of civil engineering projects. This position will support all aspects of construction projects for roadways, bridges, utilities, sewers, facilities, etc.; perform oversight and inspection of contractor activities; interpret plans and specifications and ensure work is performed in accordance with them; document field activities; measure and calculate quantities of work completed; observe materials testing and ensure proper materials are incorporated into the work.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in engineering
  • Knowledge of mathematics and its application to engineering computations
  • Can work effectively as a team player
  • Ability to build constructive working relationships characterized by a high level of acceptance, cooperation, and mutual respect for our stakeholders
  • Show insight into the root causes of problems. Generates a range of solutions and courses of action with benefits, costs, and risks associated with each

  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills.
  • Common engineering skills. Ability to read and interpret plans and mentally visualize them. Have foresight to recognize potential construction issues in the field and bring them to the attention of appropriate parties for resolution.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe and Bluebeam.
  • Must be able to sit, walk, stand, reach with hands and arms, stoop or kneel, climb, or balance, talk, or hear, and use fingers and hands to feel objects tools or control.
  • Must be able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds on occasion.
  • Travel is required; must possess a valid license.
  • Complete state-required competency.
  • Attend job-related seminars and workshops.

Nice To Haves

  • Engineer-in-Training Certificate Preferred
  • Basic understanding of local government agency standards and databases, specifically, IDOT, CDOT, Bluebeam, and the Tollway preferred

Responsibilities

  • Understands and interprets project plans and specifications
  • Performs daily inspection and oversight of contractor’s activities to ensure all work is performed in accordance with the project plans and specifications
  • Documents field activities and submits daily reports
  • Measures and calculates quantities of completed work
  • Observes materials testing at a construction site
  • Ensures proper materials are incorporated into the work
  • Reports to the Project Lead
  • May assist the Project Lead with other duties as assigned
