About The Position

The Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science, Frost Science, is seeking a part-time Conservation Ambassador (Temporary) to assist the Museum Volunteers for the Environment (MUVE) program to facilitate habitat restoration and biodiversity monitoring in South Florida as part of the Miami Community ResilientSea Project. MUVE is a volunteer-based environmental enhancement program that uses community science, habitat restoration, outreach, eco-art, and science exhibits to engage the local community in enhancing coastal environments in Miami. Ambassadors must have a strong interest in natural sciences, as well as strong interpersonal and organizational skills and a passion for conservation. This ambassadorship position provides an exceptional opportunity to directly impact both people and the environment in a positive way. Eligible candidates can be enrolled in an academic program that will allow them to receive credit for completing this position. About the Miami Community ResilientSea Project: The Miami Community ResilientSea Project is Miamis holistic sustainability-based citizen science or community science initiative that unites science, education, and grassroots action to restore habitats and advance climate resilience across Miami-Dade County. The project focuses on communities most vulnerable to the effects of climate but are the least resourced to address them. Key partners on the project include Black Women in Ecology, Evolution, and Marine Science, Debris Free Oceans, Miami Waterkeeper, the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science, Rescue a Reef, and the CLEO Institute. The Black Women in Ecology, Evolution, and Marine Science (BWEEMS) is a global non-profit dedicated to increasing the representation and influence of Black women in STEM. With 750+ members spanning 28 countries, they empower emerging and established scientists through mentorship, professional development, and community-driven opportunities.

Requirements

  • Must be able to commit to a minimum of 10-20 hours a week.
  • Availability for Saturday events and Thursday morning staff workdays is required.
  • Background clearance.
  • Drug screening as part of the Drug Free Workplace Program.
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident or a citizen of a U.S. territory.

Nice To Haves

  • Background or interest in native plants, community science, community engagement, science communication, environmental science, or STEM education.
  • Familiarity with Florida flora/fauna and ecology.
  • Reliable and punctual, with good attendance and strong communication skills.
  • Positive attitude and the ability to work well with different personalities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, familiar with iNaturalist.
  • Black Women in Ecology, Evolution and Marine Science (BWEEMS) membership.
  • Interest in Frost Sciences mission.

Responsibilities

  • Support habitat restoration activities, facilitate biodiversity monitoring initiatives, promote community engagement.
  • Attend weekly staff workdays, monthly public workdays, and special events (City Nature Challenge, Earth Day, Baynanza).
  • Conduct outreach in-person and online to promote the City Nature Challenge and the Miami Community ResilientSea Project.
  • Miami ResilientSea Project social media takeover including a minimum of 4 posts with videos/pictures with captions.
  • Develop engaging social media content to increase visibility and participation in the City Nature Challenge.
  • Assist in planning, coordinating, and facilitating City Nature Challenge and Miami Community ResilientSea events.
  • Individual ambassadorship project related to habitat enhancement and aligned with MUVEs mission.
  • Lead outreach events throughout Miami-Dade County at festivals and schools.
  • Develop and complete special projects as needed.
  • Perform other assigned tasks.
