About The Position

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas invites applications for Confocal and Biological Imaging Core Manager, College of Science [R0149458] . ROLE of the POSITION The Confocal and Biological Imaging Core Manager provides full time technical support, management, operation and upkeep of all microscope modalities in the imaging core at UNLV. The core manager will provide research and microscopy support to UNLV faculty/researchers and outside users. They will train students, manage supply inventory, prepare imaging samples, make media and other reagents. The incumbent will be able to perform standard methods of molecular and cell biology, such as for DNA cloning and/or tissue culture. The manager will prepare tissues for histology and perform immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, and other staining techniques on biological samples as needed by the core users.

Requirements

  • This position requires a PhD from an accredited college or university as recognized by the United States Department of Education and/or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and 3-5 years of experience.
  • Extensive experience in the operation of multiple light microscopy modalities including laser scanning confocal.
  • Knowledge of Windows-based operating systems and associated software applications is a necessity.
  • Must be willing to continually keep abreast of new technical developments in light microscopy and implement these in the laboratory.
  • Must be able to collaborate effectively with both internal and external users; this includes sample preparation, analysis, data interpretation, and description of analytical techniques/interpretation for manuscript submission.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of image analysis software application, including but not limited to FIJI and Imaris.
  • Multiplex imaging.
  • Must be capable of managing accounts and creating facility use schedules.
  • Troubleshoot and solve equipment and analytical problems arising in the laboratory.
  • Must be able to teach faculty, students, and outside users light microscopy theory in an annual analytical methods course.
  • Must instruct users on proper sample preparation to ensure that this does not affect negatively the analytical results.
  • Must be able to train faculty, students, and outside users in the operation of a laser scanning confocal, deconvolved wide field and multiphoton microscopy, and associated equipment.
  • Must be able to assess the needs of users and work with them by performing quality control on all analyses to ensure that data are suitable to publish in high-quality, peer-reviewed journals.
  • Ability to work well with others in a team on a collaborative basis.
  • Ability to be a wise and effective mentor to students and to promote the general welfare and success of students within the UNLV School of Life Sciences and College of Sciences policies and curriculum
  • Ability to work in person, hold office hours, communicate verbally and by email, hold in person meetings and work during normal business hours.
  • Ability to work closely with the Faculty Director of the core to acquire new and additional imaging modalities and technologies.

Nice To Haves

  • 5-7 years of experience as well as Postdoctoral Scholar experience are preferred.
  • Multiphoton or x-ray tomography experience.
  • Knowledge of lab safety and hazardous waste disposal and serve on committees related to facilities operation .
  • 4D live cell microscopy experience.
  • Mammalian cell culture and general molecular techniques including transfection, and molecular cloning.
