About The Position

The Instrument Design and Fabrication Core Facility, is an ASU Knowledge Enterprise Core facility. The Instrument shop is an ISO 9001:2015 and AS9100D certified facility and is seeking to fill a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machinist Senior position in our research machine shop. We are seeking a skilled CNC Machinist to serve as a key technical partner in our research machine shop. In this role, you will collaborate directly with researchers to transform complex research concepts into high-precision prototypes, ensuring the optimal and safe operation of our manufacturing equipment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and three (3) years of experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
  • Six years of recent machinist experience in a toolroom environment; OR, Completion of a two-year machine tool technology program and 4 years’ toolroom machinist experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Nice To Haves

  • Development and design process consulting of 3D CAD model parts, drawings and assemblies.
  • Properties of materials generally used in a prototype environment.

Responsibilities

  • Custom Fabrication: Fabricate high-precision mechanical components, assemblies, and prototype parts from a wide range of metals, alloys, plastics, and machinable ceramics.
  • Precision Inspection: Perform detailed quality assurance (QA/QC) using precision instruments to verify all work meets exact tolerances and research specifications.
  • CNC & Manual Operation: Set up, program, and operate 2-axis to 3-axis CNC mills and lathes, along with standard manual toolroom machinery.
  • Technical Interpretation: Read and interpret everything from rough hand-drawn sketches to complex CAD-generated blueprints and engineering prints.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Conduct routine maintenance and in-house repairs on all toolroom machinery and supporting shop equipment.
  • Safety Compliance: Maintain all required laboratory safety certifications and strictly follow safety protocols during daily shop operations.
