About The Position

PRIMARY PURPOSE: The Computer Hardware Technician’s primary purpose is to diagnose issues with various types of computer hardware, operating systems, and software, and conduct the needed repairs for USF departments, faculty, staff, and students. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 2 years of experience in a technical field.
  • Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.
  • Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license is required.
  • Hardware: This job requires that the employee be able to perform component-level troubleshooting and diagnostics including the use of appropriate diagnostic tools and testing equipment.
  • The applicant should have an in-depth knowledge of standard computer architecture and components such as motherboards, CPUs, RAM, hard drives, and power supplies.
  • They should be able to identify parts and assess their compatibility with given hardware systems.
  • The applicant should be familiar with proper procedures for computer disassembly and reassembly, including the use of appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Additionally, the applicant should be familiar with troubleshooting peripheral devices such as printers, monitors, keyboards, mice, and external drives.
  • A solid understanding of warranty repair procedures and documentation requirements is essential for this position.
  • Software: The applicant should demonstrate proficiency in troubleshooting various operating systems including Windows, Android, macOS and iOS.
  • They must be capable of performing system configuration and optimization tasks as well as virus and malware clean-up.
  • A comprehensive knowledge of common software issues and their solutions is essential for success in this role.
  • The successful candidate must possess strong communication skills, including the ability to clearly explain technical issues to non-technical users in a customer service-oriented manner.
  • Active listening during problem intake and professional written communication for documentation and status updates are essential.
  • The applicant should demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with faculty, staff, and students while maintaining a professional demeanor in all client-facing situations.
  • Strong organizational abilities are critical for this position, including effective time management and the ability to prioritize multiple service requests simultaneously.
  • The role requires meticulous attention to detail in documentation, parts and component inventory management, and consistent progress tracking and follow-up.
  • Additionally, the applicant should possess leadership capabilities, including the ability to supervise, train, and mentor temporary and student workers, as well as delegate tasks appropriately.
  • Analytical thinking and a systematic approach to problem-solving, combined with the ability to work independently, are necessary for success in this position.
  • The candidate must remain current with evolving industry standards, including operating system updates and versions, as well as changes in hardware technology that necessitate new repair techniques and tools.
  • The candidate will also be responsible for obtaining and maintaining manufacturer-specific certifications required to conduct warranty repairs on various devices, with particular emphasis on Mac and Dell products.

Responsibilities

  • Hardware Diagnosis and Repair Diagnose issues with various types of computer hardware and related peripherals
  • Conduct repairs for departments, faculty, staff, and students at USF
  • Disassemble and test equipment at the component level
  • Order appropriate replacement parts
  • Replace malfunctioning components with known good components
  • Reassemble equipment
  • Software and Operating System Support Diagnose issues with university-supported software and operating systems
  • Conduct needed fixes or implement workarounds
  • Inventory and Documentation Management Maintain inventory of parts and components
  • Track progress of service requests and update ticketing systems
  • Log repairs and services performed
  • Provide regular updates on work progress to clientele and supervisor
  • Service Request Management Receive and address incidents and service requests from individual end users, IT Service Management, and IT Leadership
  • Conduct in-person interactions during intake and initial assessment of technical issues
  • Supervision Supervise temporary and/or student workers
  • The position also requires obtaining and maintaining certifications to complete repair work on devices under warranty and out of warranty.
