About The Position

Founded in 1953, Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) is a multi-campus College located in scenic Upstate NY, with locations in Troy and Malta. HVCC offers over 80 degree and certificate programs across three schools: Business and Liberal Arts; Health Sciences; and Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). As one of 30 community colleges in the State University of New York (SUNY) system, it serves nearly 9,000 students annually and is recognized as a leader in career and transfer preparation, workforce training initiatives, distance learning, and service to a diverse student population. The Comptroller position is within the Finance Department and reports to the Chief Fiscal Officer or their designee. This role involves directing accounting, bursar, and accounts payable staff, ensuring adherence to financial standards, managing cash, preparing financial statements, and acting as a primary liaison with external auditors.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Accounting or other related field from an accredited college or university with finance or business emphasis.
  • Five years of progressively responsible experience in accounting or finance and related financial systems.
  • Three years of supervision experience.
  • Knowledge of General Ledger and Fund Accounting.

Responsibilities

  • Directs the Accounting, Bursar, and/or Accounts Payable staff to ensure efficient daily financial operations.
  • Ensures adherence to GAAP/GASB standards.
  • Responsible for cash management, including decision making, recordkeeping and reporting, cash flow planning, and all aspects of banking business and reconciliations.
  • Prepares the annual audited financial statements, monthly financial reports, and tax compliance (e.g., 990T, 1098T, 1099).
  • Acts as primary liaison with external auditors, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations.
  • Ensures alignment with established financial policies and procedures and best practices to safeguard College assets.
  • Responsible for all financial aspects, in person and on-line, as it relates to the student registration process and all related accounting and internal controls in coordination with the Bursar office operations.
  • Responsible for timely billings to counties (county chargebacks) and state related to student enrollment.
  • Responsible for the supervision of the Accounts Payable Department and all issues related to the payment of vendors in accordance with institutional guidelines.
  • Responsible for all of the College’s fiscal reporting to federal, state, local entities.
  • Conduct departmental assessments and unit plans in compliance with institutional goals and objectives.
