About The Position

Founded in 1953, Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) is a multi-campus institution in Upstate NY, offering over 80 degree and certificate programs across three schools. The Director of Counseling Services role, situated within the Center for Careers and Transfer, Student Services department, involves providing visionary leadership and direction for counseling staff, clinical and administrative supervision, and developing and implementing comprehensive counseling and wellness programs. This position is crucial for promoting student mental health and development, delivering individual and group counseling, and managing crisis intervention.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Counseling, Counseling Psychology, Social Work, Higher Education Counseling, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Must possess and maintain a current New York State license as a Licensed Psychologist, Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW).
  • Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible post-licensure professional experience in counseling, mental health services, student development, or guidance services in a higher education setting.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student success, wellness, equity, and inclusion.
  • Evidence of innovative and strategic leadership, sound clinical judgment, and the ability to develop and implement programs responsive to evolving student needs.
  • Strong oral, written, interpersonal, and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff, administrators, and external partners.
  • Experience with crisis response, case management, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with clinical supervision, training graduate interns, and/or managing professional staff.
  • Familiarity with electronic health records, assessment practices, and applicable federal and state regulations, including FERPA, HIPAA as applicable, Title IX, and related compliance standards.

Responsibilities

  • Provides visionary leadership, and direction for Counseling Services staff to effectively deliver services and initiatives that promote and support student mental health and development.
  • Provides clinical and administrative supervision of Counseling Services staff and graduate student interns.
  • Administrative responsibility for Counseling Services includes but not limited to setting strategic vision and priorities, researching and implementing evidence-based practices, unit assessment, and budget preparation.
  • Maintains awareness of and implements industry evidence-based practices, follows data trends, interprets professional journal research, technical procedures and regulations.
  • In collaboration with other Student Development offices, develops and implements comprehensive counseling and wellness programs, presentations, events and outreach throughout the year.
  • Delivers confidential individual and group counseling services, maintains accurate and compliant clinical documentation and provides leadership and support in crisis intervention and response.
  • Cultivates collaborative relationships with internal stakeholders to support student needs, and partners with external agencies to coordinate and facilitate appropriate referrals.
  • Refers students to appropriate academic and student affairs departments to provide guidance and support for students.
  • Develops and facilitates ongoing training and consultation for faculty and staff on matters related to student development and mental health related concerns.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
