About The Position

The Whole Person (TWP) is seeking a highly skilled and principled Compliance & Financial Integrity Officer (CFIO) to serve as the organization’s independent internal audit and compliance authority. Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, this officer‑level role ensures organizational transparency, regulatory compliance, strong internal controls, and accurate financial practices across all departments. The CFIO provides objective analysis, identifies risk exposures, monitors compliance with tax and regulatory requirements, evaluates documentation integrity, and strengthens TWP’s overall governance framework.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, Compliance, or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in internal auditing, compliance, or financial integrity.
  • Strong understanding of nonprofit financial operations and regulatory requirements.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and reporting skills.
  • Demonstrated independence, confidentiality, and ethical judgment.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Certifications: CIA, CFE, CCEP, CPA, or similar.
  • Experience working with Board‑level committees.
  • Background in nonprofit or grant‑funded environments.

Responsibilities

  • Lead TWP’s internal audit function, including development and execution of the annual risk‑based audit plan.
  • Review financial processes, payroll, purchasing, AP/AR, cash handling, and grant expenditures.
  • Assess accuracy of financial transactions, reconciliations, and supporting documentation.
  • Monitor compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as grant and contract requirements.
  • Evaluate policies, SOPs, training, and documentation for regulatory alignment.
  • Identify compliance gaps and recommend corrective actions.
  • Monitor adherence to nonprofit accounting standards and internal control expectations.
  • Oversee compliance with tax‑related obligations, including: IRS filings (e.g., Form 990 and associated schedules) State charitable registrations Payroll tax remittances and reporting Sales/use tax compliance (as applicable)
  • Alert the Board to irregularities, delays, or risks and recommend corrective measures.
  • Monitor timely and accurate payroll remittances.
  • Oversee completion of annual filings (Form 5500).
  • Ensure required disclosures and notices are issued.
  • Report risks to the Board.
  • Audit consumer files and program documentation for completeness and compliance.
  • Support program leaders in strengthening documentation standards.
  • Provide quarterly/annual compliance and audit updates to the Board.
  • Present findings, emerging risks, and corrective action progress.
  • Serve as the Board’s primary liaison for compliance and financial integrity matters.
  • Conduct or support investigations of compliance concerns or financial irregularities.
  • Monitor and follow up on ethics and whistleblower reports.
  • Collaborate with Finance, HR, Programs, IT, and Executive Leadership while maintaining strict independence.
  • Provide training and guidance on compliance, documentation, and internal controls.
