About The Position

The Competency Support Specialist/Case Manager plays a crucial role in providing education and case management services to individuals undergoing competency restoration in both jail and community settings. This position is part of the Allegheny County Mobile Competency Restoration Program, which aims to assist individuals with serious mental illness and co-occurring disorders in achieving competency for court proceedings. The specialist will work closely with various stakeholders, including patients, treatment teams, and legal entities, to ensure comprehensive support and service delivery.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a Social Science related discipline.
  • Minimum of 2 years of case management-related experience required; preferred experience providing restoration services or experience teaching.
  • Knowledge about mental illness and co-occurring disorders; a basic understanding of the criminal-legal system preferred.
  • Prior experience in a psychiatric hospital, behavioral health center, or correctional facility preferred.
  • Knowledge of community supports for individuals transitioning from jail into the community.
  • Ability to plan, organize, develop, and document services effectively.
  • Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Intermediate computer skills in typing/keyboarding, Microsoft Word, and Excel programs.
  • Ability to interact well with varied levels of managerial, clinical, custody, court, and administrative staff.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a specialist for restoration of competency for individuals with serious mental illness and/or co-occurring disorders as ordered by the Court.
  • Provide competency restoration education services to assist individuals in attaining competency for court proceedings using the PA COMPKIT.
  • Establish ongoing relationships with patients, interdisciplinary treatment teams, county jail staff, judges, and other legal personnel.
  • Research, identify, and coordinate community care including housing, medication, transportation, and vocational opportunities.
  • Ensure all mandated paperwork is completed in relation to services provided.
  • Document services in compliance with policy, patient rights, confidentiality, and Medicaid regulations.
