About The Position

The Compensation Manager is responsible for the design, administration, and oversight of systemwide compensation and classification programs aligned with the financial and strategic goals for each campus. This position leads the development, implementation and maintenance of compensation policies and programs that support recruitment, retention and engagement of a highly skilled workforce. As a key member of the HR Leadership Team, the Compensation Manager reports to UNH CHRO and partners with institutional leaders to identify strategic opportunities, strengthen the University System and HR brands, deliver critical programs, and support organizational change initiatives across the system.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and 5-7 years of progressively responsible compensation experience in design and/or administration of compensation and classification programs and at least 2 years' experience leading teams or projects to meet organizational and customer needs.
  • Proven ability to design and deliver compensation strategies that attract, retain, and engage talent.
  • Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills, with the ability to effectively partner with diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and manage multiple projects with competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Customer-focused consulting skills, including experience communicating compensation programs and providing guidance to leaders and employees.
  • Knowledge of compensation laws, regulations, and best practices, including compliance and pay equity principles.
  • Ability to anticipate and respond to evolving business and workforce needs.
  • Experience with HRIS systems (Workday preferred) and compensation management software.

  • Experience leading complex or systemwide compensation initiatives.
  • Experience working in complex, matrixed, or multi-unit organizations (e.g., higher education, healthcare).

Responsibilities

  • Compensation Administration Develop and implement innovative compensation strategies through collaborative and creative input, combined with data analysis and a deep understanding of the University’s future challenges. Areas of focus include bonus plans, market position, salary range design, pay mix analysis, separation incentive plans and succession planning.
  • Evaluate comparator compensation and benefits programs to advance the classification and compensation interests of USNH. Maintain and enhance compensation structures to ensure internal equity, market competitiveness, and future workforce readiness.
  • Serve as the systemwide subject matter expert on compensation and classification, and lead the annual salary increase process for all campuses. Ensure compliance with all state and federal compensation/classification and benefits laws and regulations.
  • Communication/Education Lead education and outreach efforts to promote understanding of USNH compensation/classification approaches, includes developing and providing presentations and education seminars, writing communications, meeting with small groups, and counseling/coaching/assisting individuals in person. Address and resolve difficult and exceptional situations involving employee compensation and classification issues. Communicate updates to compensation program components to appropriate stakeholders in a clear and timely manner.
  • Incentive Plan Development Partner with leadership on incentive compensation plans and influence the decision-making process and outcome by providing detailed analyses, models, and recommendations. Lead the roll out and execution of Incentive Plans in line with compensation policies, practices and processes by building and maintaining effective working relationships with departments and Finance in the development, design, and implementation of incentive compensation plans. Design incentive plans, policies, and processes by collecting and analyzing results from benchmarking partners and collecting business requirements and market development. Develop metrics, goals, training, and communication processes to manage the evolution of incentive plans in keeping with changing business strategies and market conditions. Collaborate with departments, Finance and other functions as required to develop data capture and reporting capabilities for implementing plans and assessing plan effectiveness.
