About The Position

Performs professional correction work supervising adults placed on probation by the courts. Responsible for maintenance of the casefile and effective supervision of offenders placed on this caseload as a result of sex-related offenses. This caseload will include previous sex offenses that are required to register as a sex offender, sex-related cases that are not required to register, and sex offenders transferred out to other jurisdictions and those preparing to be released to our jurisdiction from TDCJ. This caseload will also include the military veteran probation population. Extensive field work is a requirement of the position. Work involves regularly meeting with probationers to ensure adherence to terms of probation and maintain records of probationers' activities and status. Employee is also responsible for determining level of supervision, providing limited counseling, referring clients to probation assistance programs and conferring with law enforcement and court personnel in matters pertaining to violation of probation by probationers. Employee is subject to usual potential of contact with legally delinquent adults.

Requirements

  • A minimum of a bachelor's degree conferred by an institution of higher education accredited by an accrediting organization recognized by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
  • The preferred degree would be in criminal justice, criminology, social work, psychology, sociology, rehabilitative studies or a related field.
  • Must have at least two years of community corrections experience. In absence of this experience, the selected officer must have some special skills, such as being fluent in a language other than English.
  • Applicants cannot be employed as a peace officer or serve as a reserve peace officer.
  • Must become certified as community supervision officer within one year after hire.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Driver License and insurance.
  • Background investigation of prospective employees will be conducted.

  • Bilingual in English / Spanish desired but not required.
  • Military background and experience with sex offender cases preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Meet with probationers in office or at probationers' residence and/or work according to established schedules, or more often as necessary.
  • Takes weekly/monthly report, collects court ordered fees, obtains urine samples from probationers for drug-use analysis and enforces the conditions of probation.
  • Conducts risk and needs assessments and develops supervision plans based on criminogenic factors and applies risk reduction strategies.
  • Utilizes computerized data entry equipment and various word processing programs and maintains files to document all contacts with probationers.
  • Attends necessary court proceedings, maintains relationship with the court, testifies as needed, prepares violation reports and recommends modifications.
  • Reviews case records to determine compliance with State standards and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.
