About The Position

Community Service Officer's (CSO) are part-time student employees of the Oakton College Police Department that perform the following duties: Clerical duties such as maintaining files and records, processing forms, gathering and organizing documents, and typing and photocopying documents; answering telephones, monitoring cameras, responding to general inquiries regarding Department programs, and routing specific calls to appropriate personnel; attending college policing outreach events to distribute information flyers and provide information on college outreach events. Department Name: Oakton Police Department Campus Location: Des Plaines Length of Employment: Spring 2026; with opportunity to renew employment for Summer semester 2026. Can a student do homework in this position? Sometimes Hours Available: 5-15 hours a week, Monday- Friday Schedule Flexibility: Student schedule will fluctuate based on what assignments are accepted/refused. Once accepted, students are expected to follow through with their determined schedule with minimal adjustments.

Requirements

  • Must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours during Fall and Spring semesters.
  • Must have an overall GPA of 2.0 or higher and be in good standing at Oakton College.
  • Eligible to work in the United States.
  • Able to sit for extended periods of time.
  • Demonstrated reliability and responsibility.
  • Friendly, flexible, organized, courteous and punctuality a must.
  • Ability to complete assignments at the Des Plaines campus.
  • Ability to monitor cameras and record events.

Nice To Haves

  • Exceptional communication and organizational skills with strong detail orientation preferred.
  • Proficiency and experience using Microsoft Office and Google technology (GSUITE) preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.

Responsibilities

  • Complete a 1 week mandatory training with the Police Department.
  • Perform accepted assignments as described in the terms outlined by the supervisor and staff.
  • Provide office support with general projects including but not limited to: filing, scanning, shredding, and copying.
  • Maintain confidentiality and secure handling of paperwork containing personal or academic information.
  • Answering telephones, monitor the cameras, responding to general inquiries regarding department programs.
  • Attending College policing outreach events to distribute informational flyers and provide information on college outreach events.
  • Communicate with staff and supervisor regarding any challenges or issues that arise during each assignment and collaborate with staff in finding resolutions.
  • Refer visitors and students to proper resources/officers based on an individual's needs.
