About The Position

People Serving People is the largest and most comprehensive emergency shelter for families experiencing homelessness in Minnesota and a dedicated leader in homeless prevention. This Community Safety Coordinator position promotes the safety and security of the community at People Serving People’s shelter facility. The Community Safety Coordinator supports the operation and maintenance of the shelter’s security and safety infrastructure, engages stakeholders to identify and address safety needs, and empowers community members to safeguard each other through training and related supports. Certification in Wicklander Interview and investigatory skills a plus. Bilingual (Spanish) preferred but not required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED, (1) Year of relevant job experience, or Certified Criminal Justice Professional
  • Basic First Aid/CPR/AED Certification (Completed within 30 days of employment)
  • De-escalation training/Certification (Completed within 60 days of employment)
  • NARCAN training (Completed within 30 days of employment)
  • Highly competent with Microsoft software including Outlook, Word, Excel, and the Office365 suite of applications including Microsoft Teams and SharePoint.
  • Experience using web-based portals for procurement and compliance.
  • Experience using, maintaining, and troubleshooting network video recorders, IP cameras and wireless bridges, with a basic knowledge of network architecture.
  • Experience working with diverse teams and engaging constructively with diverse stakeholders, ideally but not necessarily those who have experienced homelessness.
  • Familiarity with security equipment including but not limited to security cameras and network video recorders, access controls, metal detection and mass notification systems.
  • Experience in training sourcing and delivery, ideally but not necessarily on safety topics.
  • Experience overseeing facility safety, including the identification and elimination of physical hazards associated with but not limited to tripping, falling and electrocution.
  • Familiarity with commercial security industry and civilian and/or military law enforcement. Formal experience in security or law enforcement is not required.
  • Familiarity with criminal justice issues impacting marginalized and oppressed communities as well as with disparities and inequities created by systemic racism.
  • Familiarity with the impact of trauma as well as trauma-informed and trauma-responsive practices.
  • Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification in Wicklander Interview and investigatory skills a plus.

  • Bachelor’s degree in public safety/criminal justice
  • Experience chairing or serving on committees or working groups desired.

Responsibilities

  • Partners with Community Safety Manager (CSM) for key training initiatives for PSP staff, security, and safety team members.
  • In partnership with the CSM, supports and supervises third party security Garda contract responsibilities.
  • Works collaboratively with CSM to create and implement plans to support guests with safety concerns and create a more progressive approach to the People Serving People’s security awareness.
  • Conduct bi-monthly audits of safety/first aid supplies.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA regulatory guidelines; conducting quarterly audits to ensure compliance.
  • In partnership with the CSM, conduct quarterly audits to ensure compliance with all State Fire regulatory codes.
  • Partners with CSM to continuously evaluate the physical safety of the shelter facility and identify/resolve potential hazards.
  • Attends Guest Advisory Council no less than quarterly to solicit feedback on and respond to any shelter guest concerns regarding community safety. Provide regular safety information and resources to guests.
  • Collaborates with Trauma Informed Care Committee and other groups to promote trauma-informed and responsive community safety practices.
  • Conduct safety and security related investigations in partnership with the CSM, generated from PDL (Salesforce) entries.
  • Utilize and operate a CCTV system to support investigations and conduct audits.
  • Prepare written investigative reports for internal and/or external government agencies.
  • Acts as a liaison with Federal, State, and local Law Enforcement and emergency services.
  • Required to testify in court proceedings related to criminal or civil investigative cases generated either from People Serving People or within the immediate surrounding downtown area.
  • Member of the Hennepin County Shield Unit and attends all monthly meetings.
  • Works in collaboration with the Resident Resources Department resolving guest related situations.
  • Responsible to conduct annual review of Fire and weather-related emergencies with staff and security.
  • Conducts weekly CCTV random audits of security team to ensure all policies and procedures are adhered to.
  • Required to act as a liaison between local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies and People Serving People.
  • Required to be a Mandated Reporter and work in partnership with Child Protective Services Investigators.
  • Co-Captains/host the monthly Community Safety Committee meetings in partnership with the CSM.
  • Ensure that all security procedures are followed to Standard Operating Procedures, or the POST orders provided to all Security Officers.
  • Ensures all visitors are escorted into People Serving People.
  • Resolves conflicts utilizing approved de-escalation tactics.
  • Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Trained to respond to all medical emergencies and activate emergency procedures.
  • Answers off-hours calls in the event of an emergency, responding when needed.
