About The Position

This position is located in the Investigations Division of the Police Department within the City of Oklahoma City and is under the direction of an immediate supervisor. This position is designed to assist individuals victimized by criminal activity. The program also extends services to those who suffer trauma due to a sudden tragedy or loss, including victims and survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, homicide, robbery, and assault. The position is primary responsible for coordinating and performing public education or community outreach in support of various departmental programs and activities. The employee is also responsible for developing and/or generating program ideas, monitoring the quality and effectiveness of existing programs and activities, and recommending and implementing program changes. Essential job functions include: planning, organizing and coordinating public outreach in support of departmental programs and activities, developing public education programs designed to generate public or community interest and/or support; and traveling to present these public education programs to citizens. The Community Relations Coordinator may also be responsible for preparing and maintaining divisional records and reports, generating statistical data, evaluating the effectiveness of existing communications programs and materials, planning and organizing events, and serving on and traveling to various task forces and committees. The position requires well-developed communication skills, and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees at all levels of the organization, outside agencies, public/private groups, and the general public. The employee works within established policy and divisional guidelines and independently plans and implements new projects and activities. Work products are reviewed for overall effectiveness, program accomplishments and soundness of judgment.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of public education and community outreach.
  • Skill in speaking effectively before groups.
  • Skill in communicating verbally and in writing using tact and diplomacy.
  • Skill in developing and coordinating community relations programs and activities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to accurately develop and maintain records and statistical data.
  • Ability to evaluate program quality, effectiveness, and initiate appropriate changes.
  • Ability to coordinate and manage multiple projects and activities.
  • Possession of a valid Driver License (Operator).

Nice To Haves

  • Possession of a college degree and/or experience in victim advocacy.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English and Spanish and experience working with populations with limited English proficiency.
  • Knowledge of law enforcement structure, practices, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques used to recruit, organize, train, motivate, and recognize volunteers and volunteer organizations.
  • Experience working with resource and referral services, with an understanding of crime's social and individual impacts.
