About The Position

The Community Programs Assistant Coordinator plays a key role in supporting the successful implementation and ongoing coordination of youth and family programs at the Chinatown YMCA. Under the direct supervision of the Program Directors, this position is responsible for assisting with the planning, execution, and evaluation of a variety of community-based programs, including enrichment classes, family events, and food distribution programs. The Assistant Coordinator serves as a vital liaison between staff, participants, and families, ensuring that all programs are delivered in alignment with the YMCA’s mission of youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The ideal candidate is flexible, proactive, and dependable, with a commitment to maintaining a safe, inclusive, and positive environment throughout the program.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • Experience working with youth and families in a program or community setting.
  • Comfortable leading physical activities with youth.
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills.
  • Must be able to work a consistent Monday–Friday schedule, with some mandatory Saturdays and occasional evenings for special events.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with elementary or middle school youth and adults.
  • Familiarity with and connections in the local San Francisco community.
  • Bilingual skills in Cantonese, Mandarin, Spanish, or other languages.

Responsibilities

  • Support enrichment programs by regularly checking in with instructors to ensure quality and consistency.
  • Assist enrichment instructors during class sessions by providing classroom support, managing materials, and helping to maintain a positive and productive learning environment.
  • Greet and engage with parents to build strong, trusting relationships.
  • Collaborating with the Program Lead to plan and run family events for youth and adults.
  • Engage participants in meaningful, age-appropriate experiences that foster personal growth and development.
  • Set a positive example for staff, children, and volunteers.
  • Enforce YMCA safety policies, supervision standards, and mandated reporting requirements.
  • Monitor participants' activities, enforce safety regulations, and respond swiftly to emergency situations.
  • Ensure all program activities adhere to YMCA of San Francisco’s child safety protocols and best practices.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records including attendance, emergency contacts, and policy documents.
  • Follow guidelines outlined in the YMCA of San Francisco Child Care Staff Manual.
  • Ensure all youth programs comply with safety and security requirements.
  • Foster respectful and professional communication with staff, participants, parents, and volunteers.
  • Incorporate input from parents, participants, and staff when planning activities.
  • Attend required staff meetings and training sessions.
