About The Position

Writopia Lab, an award-winning 501(c)3 nonprofit that runs writing workshops for kids, is looking for an enthusiastic individual with nonprofit experience to fill the role of Community Partnership Coordinator & Instructor in our developing San Francisco Bay Area. Since its formation in New York City in 2007, Writopia Lab has grown into a nationwide community of young writers. Our mission is to foster joy, literacy, and critical thinking in children and teens from all backgrounds through creative writing. We create a safe and engaging space for kids and teens at all stages of the writing process, and we aim to provide the creative inspiration, individual attention, and intellectual environment that may not be available to them at school. The Community Partnership Coordinator & Instructor will work closely with the Regional Manager in the San Francisco Bay Area to build robust community partnerships that result in a sustainable Writopia Lab operation. This position will establish relationships with local nonprofits, businesses, and organizations serving youth in order to connect and involve Writopia Lab in the community. Additionally, this person will lead writing workshops for children and teens aged seven to eighteen.

  • Strong project management skills collaborating with internal and external people and organizations
  • Enthusiasm for youth-centered work
  • Excellent active listening skills
  • Excellent professional written, verbal, and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency with Google GSuite
  • Familiarity with social emotional learning concepts and practices
  • Some local travel required
  • Ability to commute reliably to lab locations
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Three to five years experience working with nonprofit in a programs, operations, or development capacity
  • Experience developing and implementing marketing strategies
  • Experience working with youth in after-school programs, especially writing and/or debate programs

Responsibilities

  • Work with the Regional Manager to promote and market Writopia Lab and its services through social media, events, and partnerships
  • Support outreach efforts such as tabling at street fairs and open house and community events
  • Support program operations, including online events
  • Identify, build, and co-manage strategic community partnerships that result in creating revenue (local schools, libraries, and community organizations in the Bay Area)
  • Research and maintain a running list of prospective partner sites
  • Act as a point of contact for partner sites regarding scheduling and instructional needs
  • Oversee the Scholastic Writing Awards process in the Bay Area
  • Lead in-person and off-site workshops and private sessions for children and teens in accordance with Writopia’s pedagogy
  • Engage with young writers on a group and individual basis, encourage setting and achieving writing goals in a fun and productive way
  • Foster a supportive, collaborative, safe workshop environment where writers feel comfortable expressing themselves
  • Navigate workshop dynamics ensuring writers of different abilities, strengths, and affinities feel included and inspired
  • Provide strength-based feedback to writers regularly in workshop and complete end-of-trimester written feedback for families
  • Perform other duties as assigned
