About The Position

As an organization that serves 17 counties, ABC of Southwest Texas works to engage our community in meaningful ways through education initiatives, community events, volunteer opportunities, and service learning. We are seeking a high school senior or undergraduate student with an interest in Public Relations, Non -Profit Management, Communications, Psychology, Sociology, or other similar fields. This role works directly with the Community Engagement Manager to participate in outreach events, recruit volunteers, create volunteer opportunities, and support the goals of the Development Team. ABC of Southwest Texas is a 43 -year -old organization based in San Antonio, Texas, that serves children and families with special healthcare needs regardless of income. We believe in inclusivity, and all our services are free to any family member who needs them. In addition to our Autism Services Program, ABC offers comprehensive case management, prescription assistance, and grief and loss support for parents who have lost a child. ABC of Southwest Texas works closely with local universities and community organizations to compensate interns through course credit for internship requirements and/or financial compensation. Students can also expect to receive mentorship, networking opportunities, reference letters, and other professional development opportunities. ABC of Southwest Texas strives to empower the next generation of community builders and change agents. We do so by incorporating the 8 NACE competencies into our internship program. Proactive Development: This role will include a membership to the San Antonio Volunteer Administrators and invitations to additional networking opportunities. Mentorship is an integral part of ABC’s internship program. Effective Communication: This role will provide daily opportunities to sharpen communication skills from professional email interaction to community presentations. Cultural Awareness: As a major Hispanic serving non -profit, this role will interact with multiple cultures and backgrounds. Interns in this role will be guided on how to have impactful and culturally sensitive conversation and interactions. Problem -Solving: Interns will have the ability to practice this skill in creating volunteer opportunities and creating plans for outreach that met grant requirements. Collaboration: Interns will work directly with the Community Engagement Manager, ABC staff, volunteers, and community members on a regular basis. Technological Literacy: This role will have intern craft their skills using Microsoft Office, volunteer management software, and outreach tracking software. Career Planning: Mentorship in this role includes internship and career development goals that will be focused on throughout the semester. Introductions will be made when possible. Advocacy: With regular one -on -one meetings, interns will be encouraged to share concerns, goals, and insights.

Requirements

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with families, colleagues, and community partners.
  • Proficiency in managing multiple tasks, keeping accurate records, and maintaining organized documentation.
  • Working well with other team members, community partners, and external organizations to provide comprehensive support.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and contribute to a positive organizational culture
  • Valid Texas Driver License
  • Reliable transportation
  • Interns must pass a criminal background check

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish, preferred but not required

Responsibilities

  • Travel locally independently or with staff to conduct outreach initiatives
  • Provide support during community education initiatives
  • Provide support during community engagement events such as Open Houses, The Angel Affair, and others
  • Coordinated opportunities for volunteers to have impactful experiences
  • Working well with other team members, community partners, and external organizations to provide comprehensive support
