About The Position

Under the direction of the Communications and Marketing Officer, the Communications Supervisor is responsible for the organization and execution of digital and written communications of the programming and initiatives organized by McGill Recreation. This role involves creating and disseminating print and digital content related to health and wellness programming and McGill Sports Camps through various channels, including newsletters, social media, website, and in-person initiatives. The supervisor will directly supervise student casual employees and represent Athletics and Recreation at internal events.

Requirements

  • 3 years related experience
  • Strong working knowledge of social media platforms, content management systems, and digital communications tools.
  • Experienced in crafting and overseeing the production of high-quality, engaging digital content for diverse audiences.
  • Previous supervisory experience required.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated storytelling ability to create persuasive, engaging and well-written content.
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (e.g. Illustrator, Photoshop, Adobe Express) and Canva for graphics/content editing.
  • Strong written communication, organizational and planning skills.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize to meet deadlines in a structured environment.
  • Must be available to work some weeknights and weekends, as required.
  • Bilingual in French and English.
  • Authorized to work in Canada and willing to work in the province of Quebec at the campus where the position is based / located.
  • Knowledge of English: assessed at a level # (qualifier) on a scale of 0-4.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize and manage McGill Recreation’s digital communications strategy, including social media platforms (LinkedIn, Facebook, X, etc.), website content and newsletters.
  • Ensure accurate, timely and consistent information is published in support of recreational programs, services, facilities, events and initiatives.
  • Oversee content scheduling and publication to meet operational and promotional needs.
  • Supervise and organize content updates with program staff and internal stakeholders.
  • Manage all McGill Recreation social media channels, focusing on preparing captivating content with accompanying visuals, planning, publishing schedules and channel upkeep.
  • Develop comprehensive social media strategies grounded in research, with clear timelines and deliverables.
  • Design and execute campaigns to drive participation, engagement, and awareness among key audiences, particularly students and young adults.
  • Monitor performance metrics and engagement analytics and provide insights and reports to inform and refine ongoing social media strategies.
  • Oversee the maintenance and regular updating of the McGill Recreation website, ensuring accuracy, usability and compliance with McGill web standards.
  • Identify opportunities to improve navigation, clarity and user experience within established institutional frameworks.
  • Work closely with graphic designers, photographers and videographers from inception to project completion.
  • Ensure visual materials align with McGill brand guidelines and McGill Recreation visual identity.
  • Collaborate on more complex design needs with central communications or external services as required.
  • Directly supervise AMUSE student casual employees (Communication Assistants).
  • Participate in the recruitment process, including interviewing and selection.
  • Conduct regular meetings to provide training and coaching, assign work, set deadlines, monitor quality of work and evaluate probationary or trial periods.
  • Review and approve time entries weekly.
  • Represent the Athletics and Recreation unit at McGill University events, (eg. orientation initiatives, Meet McGill, etc.), to promote services, events and program offerings geared toward various audiences as well as to strengthen the relationship between McGill Recreation and other faculties, groups and organizations.
  • Responsible for creating and maintaining promotional materials up to date for events, responding to inquiries, setting up and taking down A&R event displays.
  • Connect with internal and external partners to forge and maintain relationships.
