About The Position

The Communications Specialist serves as a strong writer, strategic advisor and execution leader for enterprise-wide communication initiatives. This role will develop all forms of Mississippi Power internal communications strategies to support business success. This role also anticipates reputational risks, crafts interesting stories and timely messaging, provides opportunities for executive writing, and ensures alignment with business and regulatory objectives. The incumbent manages multiple workstreams, builds relationships across departments, works as a content creator and storyteller across multiple communications channels and delivers executive-grade communication while multi-tasking and displaying the ability to manage a demanding workload.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Business Administration or equivalent discipline preferred.
  • At least 3 years or more preferred
  • Prior public relations, public affairs, journalism or advertising experience managing multiple clients and fast-paced deliverables
  • Executive speechwriting and crisis/issue response expertise
  • Experience with utility communications, regulated industry or public-sector stakeholders
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines while gathering information and presenting recommendations to various levels of employees
  • Must be able to adjust to a flexible work schedule and to respond to emergencies and storms
  • Must have excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; be self-directed and innovative.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degrees, relevant executive education and industry designations are a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Produce clear, concise and audience-tailored content across formats, maintaining tone and professionalism
  • Design and execute communication plans with defined objectives
  • Manage stakeholder expectations through structured processes and ensure clarity and timely delivery of priorities
  • Collaborate closely with Corporate Communications leadership to identify emergent issues; develop internal and executive communication strategies to support the company’s business goals
  • Ensure communication style, approach and messages are consistent with the Mississippi Power and Southern Company’s standards and brand
  • Communicate timelines clearly, meet deadlines and manage projects when necessary
