About The Position

The Communications Specialist-Police performs critical call taker functions, receiving, screening, disseminating, and recording emergency 9-1-1 and non-emergency calls from the public and various government agencies. This role involves dispatching and maintaining radio communications with police, fire, animal control, and other field units. Key responsibilities include extensive data entry and retrieval using multiple computer systems such as CAD, REJIS, MULES, Chameleon, Mobile Data Terminals, Vesta Phone System, StarChase, KC Scout Cameras, and NCIC. The specialist also handles orders of protection, stolen property, missing persons, and operational reports, and operates secured entries and video/audio equipment within and around the Police Building, including jail entrances and exits. The position requires the ability to gather, analyze, and document critical information during life-or-death situations, ensure responder safety, and work effectively with self-initiative and minimal direct supervision. Adherence to agency policies, federal disclosure, and privacy laws is essential, and the role requires working assigned shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age at time of employment.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be a United States citizen or authorized alien worker.
  • Valid state Driver’s License and acceptable driving record required.
  • No felony convictions or commission of or participation in any felony crime, whether detected or not.
  • No on-going or repetitious history of committing or participating in Misdemeanor crimes, whether detected or not.
  • Creditable work history.
  • No experience required.
  • Able to work assigned shift, including nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Must have or be able to obtain REJIS and MULES Certification within six (6) months of hire.
  • Must pass the required computerized testing using the Criti-Call Testing Software.
  • Must pass a post-offer background check and physical which includes a drug/alcohol screening.

Nice To Haves

  • Six months to one year of experience in a related field preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform call taker functions to receive, screen, disseminate and record emergency 9-1-1 calls and nonemergency information from the general public, and federal, state and local government agencies to employees within the department via telephone, text to 9-1-1, and Teletype Device for the Deaf (TDD).
  • Dispatch, advise and maintain radio communications with police patrol, traffic, animal control, Admin, ESS, Mutual Aid, fire, local government, and detective units in the field.
  • Enter and retrieve data in multiple computer systems such as Computer Aided Dispatch System, (CAD), Regional Justice Information System (REJIS), Missouri Uniformed Law Enforcement System, (MULES), Chameleon (Animal Control), Mobile Data Terminals, Vesta Phone System, StarChase, KC Scout Cameras, and National Crime Information Center, (NCIC).
  • Receive, cancel, and/or file orders of protection, stolen property, missing persons and runaways, and stolen autos.
  • Receive, enter and disseminate operational and routine reports and messages.
  • Operate all secured entries within the Police Building, which includes all video and audio equipment within the building, outside the building and the jail entrances and exits.
  • Utilize multiple resources to gather, analyze, document critical information, and/or forward to the appropriate agency during life-or-death situations such as crimes in progress, medical emergencies, and fire/rescue incidents.
  • Perform assigned duties and tasks in a fast, effective, efficient and safe manner with self-initiative and the ability and willingness to work a majority of the time without direct supervision.
  • Accept the responsibility to support and promote the organization’s mission, goal and objectives and comply with its directives.
  • Conduct safety status checks of responders and use other available technology to ensure on-scene responders’ safety
  • Follow established agency policies and procedures, being aware of liability to the agency, and adhering to federal disclosure and privacy laws
  • Work assigned shift, including weekends and holidays, with both regular and punctual attendance.
