About The Position

Communications & Media Specialist-George Memorial Library Liaison between the library system and all media outlets. Maintains and updates media contact list and meets all publication deadlines. Coordinates interview scheduling between library staff and media outlets; participates in interviews with media if Marketing and Communications Manager or Library Director are not available. Collaborate with library staff to highlight programs and services. Collect, organize, proof, and edit all library branch programs and events each month to create a media calendar for promotions, including press releases, website news/blogs, newsletters, social media, and flyers. Central clearing point for all library communications to ensure a consistent and inclusive library identity, voice, and branding without errors, including brochures, newsletters, website content, social media, and library policies and procedures. Effectively writes to ensure the public can easily understand library services, policies, and other documents. Reviews, edits, and approves Canva Teams graphic and wording submissions for branding consistency, spelling, punctuation, and grammatical accuracy. Responds to public questions and complaints by phone and email and assists the Social Media Specialist with responses to public inquiries. Assists the Marketing & Communications Manager to train library staff to ensure all branding, writing style, and quality assurance is consistent across all library branches and adheres to the library’s Style Guide. Ensures that the Style Guide is reviewed annually. Monitors media platforms for incorrect information. Maintains statistics for monthly reports. Participates in activities and duties related to emergency management during a local state of disaster as directed by appropriate county managers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, public relations or English required.
  • 3 years job related experience; experience in media relations preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Extensive knowledge of correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Strong verbal and written communication
  • Knowledge of journalistic style – press release format, style, and information needed by media.
  • Develop working relationships with media contacts.
  • Ability to deal effectively with the press/media, public, and employees.
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook, Canva Teams knowledge.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to teach or train other staff on library style guide, writing formats, and other communication skills.
  • Website (Drupal) and social media (META Business Suite) knowledge.
  • Passion & knowledge of libraries and community engagement.
