About The Position

The Communications & External Affairs Coordinator owns the day-to-day of how IYT shows up publicly — drafting press materials, partner briefings, and social content across a fast-growing national nonprofit. This role supports engagement with government officials, school districts, and corporate partners while keeping IYT's brand and messaging consistent across every channel. The ideal candidate thrives on variety, works independently, and is motivated by mission-driven storytelling.

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, political science, education, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 1–2 years of experience in communications, nonprofit, government, or education settings.
  • Proficiency with marketing automation platforms, CMS tools, design software, and project management systems
  • Ability to quickly learn new digital tools and platforms

Responsibilities

  • Marketing & Communications Draft and edit internal and external communications, including newsletters, announcements, talking points, one-pagers, and briefing materials for diverse audiences.
  • Maintain the organization's communications calendar and track deadlines.
  • Support multi-channel content planning and development for web, social, and email.
  • Ensure consistent voice, tone, and branding across materials.
  • Monitor media mentions and compile press clips
  • Social Media Management Schedule and publish social media content across platforms
  • Monitor engagement and respond to comments/messages
  • Track social media analytics and compile monthly reports
  • Maintain social media content calendar
  • Support live coverage of events (Instagram Stories, Facebook Live)
  • Government Relations & Key Partnerships Assist with external affairs communications related to government relations (local, state, federal), school district partnerships, as well as public officials and corporate stakeholders.
  • Draft briefing materials for elected official meetings, corporate partnerships, and external affairs events
  • Track external engagement activity (meetings, events, communications) and support preparation and follow-up communications for key meetings and campaigns
  • Monitor legislative updates and policy changes affecting mentorship and education programs
  • Earned Media Support Support earned media operations, including logistics for media interviews, inquiries, and press events, and opportunity identification.
  • Identify earned media opportunities by monitoring trending topics, journalist beats, and timely news hooks (legislative developments, education reports, community events) that align with IYT's mission and expertise.
  • Support rapid-response communications in coordination with the Sr. Manager and Director.
  • Administrative & Coordination Support Provide Administrative and coordination support for public events, and external briefings.
  • Assist with the preparation of decks, agendas, and summaries for external audiences.
  • Digital Asset & Brand Management Organize and maintain the digital asset library (photos, videos, logos, templates)
  • Ensure brand compliance across all materials
  • Coordinate photo/video shoots at events and program sites
  • Update and maintain brand guidelines documentation
  • Additional Duties As Assigned.
