The Intern, Communications is a project-based experience designed to give the student or recent graduate opportunities to use what they are learning, or have recently learned, in coursework as they prepare for a career in marketing and communications. The candidate will apply their knowledge in real-world marketing/communications and internal communications projects while learning the inner workings of a large nonprofit organization and principles of collaboration with professionals. The Intern will work closely with the Social Media Manager on a wide range of communications activities like writing stories for email campaigns and Avivo's website and internal website, managing Avivo's internal website, and assisting in writing for and producing social media posts, as well as assisting with planned video production projects. The Intern will work across departments. The benefits for the intern will be a series of completed communications projects to include in their portfolio, workplace experience, and working with professionals in a nonprofit organization environment. Status: 16 hours per week; 12 weeks, April/May 2025 to July/August 2025.

  • Assist with email marketing strategies, including writing stories about Avivo programs and successful program participant stories for the website, intranet, and email newsletter.
  • Apply writing skills to various tasks, including project development, storytelling, marketing, and digital communications.
  • Learn and utilize basic graphic design to utilize photos in various places on websites, social media, and intranet.
  • Assist with development of visual assets, such as photography and video.
  • Complete one large project over span of internship, in cooperation with the Communications Team and Human Resources Teams.
  • Learn about and utilize knowledge of SharePoint intranet software to update and modernize Avivo's intranet - including sharing stories written by Intern.
  • Actively support Avivo's commitment to undoing racism and reducing disparities.
  • Recent graduate with communications, marketing or related degree.
  • Students should be in their third or fourth year of an accredited program if currently enrolled.
  • Excellent writing skills and a passion for coming up with new ideas.
  • Excellent organizational skills and a self-starter; highly professional.
  • Familiar with MS Office.
  • Strong aptitude for technology; working knowledge or willingness to obtain working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Good at asking questions with strong listening and problem-solving skills.
  • Self-motivated and shows initiative with focus on being productive.
  • Project management skills are a plus but not required.
  • Interest in learning about working within a non-profit and how various departments work together to support the larger mission.
  • Workplace experience.
  • Completed communications projects to include in portfolio.
