About The Position

Umialik Insurance Company, a member of the Western National Insurance Group, is seeking a Commercial Lines Underwriter II to join our team! The individual in this role will develop and manage a book of business by writing, retaining, and growing commercial lines accounts within assigned agencies.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively, prioritize work, and meet established deadlines.
  • Strong negotiation, collaboration, and relationship-building skills.
  • Proven ability to exercise sound business judgment in underwriting decisions.
  • One to two years of underwriting experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated intermediate organizational and prioritization skills with the ability to manage multiple competing priorities.
  • Working knowledge of industry practices, standards, and fundamental underwriting concepts.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; relevant experience in commercial lines underwriting may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Proficiency in the use of core underwriting systems, standard office equipment, and common software applications.

Responsibilities

  • Builds and maintains strong, collaborative relationships with agency partners.
  • Effectively manages an assigned agency territory to achieve established growth and profitability goals.
  • Applies established underwriting practices, processes, procedures, and assigned authority levels to evaluate operations and exposures across a variety of risk types.
  • Assesses risks and exposures for new and existing business to identify opportunities that support territory loss ratio and growth objectives.
  • Utilizes research and analysis to develop sound, practical underwriting solutions aligned with organizational goals.
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of applicable coverages, forms, symbols, endorsements, and rating by line of business.
  • Writes new business in support of annual departmental goals and objectives.
  • Makes decisions in accordance with established policies, guidelines, and underwriting authority.
  • Leverages intermediate knowledge, experience, and available resources to evaluate alternatives and recommend appropriate solutions.
  • Identifies opportunities to improve underwriting application accuracy, process efficiency, and overall effectiveness.
  • Consistently delivers an exceptional customer experience by responding promptly, maintaining a positive and professional demeanor, building rapport, demonstrating empathy, managing expectations, selecting appropriate communication channels, and taking ownership to ensure timely resolution of customer needs.
