About The Position

Responsible for the inspection of new and existing construction for compliance with adopted building codes and local ordinances to establish that requirements for life, health, safety and welfare of building occupants and the general public are met. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Perform combination inspections, primarily building, mechanical, plumbing and electrical. Perform inspections of new and existing residential, commercial, multi-family projects and all associated structures while under construction to ensure compliance with adopted codes and ordinances. Perform inspections of existing buildings to verify compliance with requirements for Certificates of Occupancy. Reviews inspection requests and determines daily inspection assignments for all inspectors. Review third party inspection and engineering reports/documents for compliance with approved plans and adopted codes. Use computerized permit tracking system to research and view building permit records and to obtain daily inspection schedules, create inspection routes, and accurately enter inspection results Provide computerized and/or written inspection results to customers. Respond to concerns and inquiries from citizens, contractors, builders, engineers, and other entities on all aspects of building inspection procedures, department policies, and the adopted building codes and local ordinances. Translate and communicate technical requirements to customers of varying technical knowledge/ability. Mentor/train other Combination Inspectors in areas of licensing/expertise/certification. Participates in code adoption process providing input and reviewing draft ordinances for accuracy and consistency with inspection procedures. Updates inspection procedures as needed and notifies/trains customers upon code and ordinance changes. Demonstrates a respectful attitude towards customers and coworkers that promotes teamwork, open communication, and effective customer service. Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential. May act as the Assistant Building Official in their absence. May perform occasional after hours/call-in inspections. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
  • Minimum four (4) years trades experience (up to two years of college level coursework in construction management, engineering, architecture or a similar field may substitute for this experience) plus two (2) years as a Combination Inspector II or similar municipal building inspector position
  • Possess ICC Residential and Building Inspector Certifications
  • Possess ICC Residential and Commercial Mechanical Inspector Certifications
  • Expert knowledge of building and codes in areas of certification (or equivalent licensing).
  • Proficient knowledge of building codes in additional trades and disciplines.
  • Expert knowledge of principles and practices in building construction regulations
  • Competent knowledge of the principles of zoning regulations.
  • Proficient customer service skills with an emphasis on conflict resolution a desire to help customers regardless of their circumstance.
  • Proficient communication skills with ability to effectively communicate information, both verbally and in writing, to customers, construction personnel, architects, engineers, and city staff in a positive and cooperative manner.
  • Proficient skills and ability to use cellular phones, and computers/software to input and retrieve data.
  • Proficient skills and ability to use internet, email, calendars, the Microsoft Office suite, and general office equipment.
  • Expert skills and ability to read and interpret blue prints, technical specifications, installation manuals and other technical documents.
  • Expert skills and ability to interpret code requirements and ordinances and within the parameters of code and ordinance requirements, seek alternative solutions.
  • ICC Residential Electrical Inspector Certification within one-year
  • ICC Commercial Electrical Inspector Certification within one-year
  • Valid Class C Texas driver's license

Nice To Haves

  • State Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Certified Technician is preferred.
  • State Electrical License preferred
