About The Position

Basic FunctionProfessional learning experience where an undergraduate or graduate student participant gains practical work experience in various divisions of Human Resources including Staffing Initiatives and Outreach and Labor Relations. Specific duties vary depending on the assigned department and business need. Internships begin with orientation in June and conclude in early August. Position will work 32 hours per week, and this position will work 100% on site. Performs duties in a safe, efficient manner and in compliance with all applicable rules and safety procedures. 

Requirements

  • Enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program or a recent graduate (within 1 year).
  • Degree program relative to intern assignments, such as Human Resources Management or related degree.
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited education institution and have successfully completed 24 credit hours.
  • GPA of 2.7 or higher on a 4.0 scale
  • Knowledge relative to intern assignments, such as Human Resources Management or related degree.
  • Knowledge of PC and related software; MS Office.

Responsibilities

  • Staffing Initiatives & Outreach
  • Will be involved in day-to-day staffing initiatives and outreach to a variety of organizations such as educational institutions (K-12 to college/university), military, minority groups, disability organizations, etc.
  • Identifies and schedules meetings (in person and remote), researches organizations, travels to schools and universities, and develops organizational lists.Conducts presentations on behalf of METRO.
  • Attends job fairs, college job fairs and other outreach events. May include working some evenings and weekends.
  • Labor Relations
  • Assists in the Union job bid process including preparing job bid postings, maintaining job bid log, collecting job bids, conducting testing, and preparing job bid announcement/awards as directed.
  • Involved in processing union personnel documents, such as Employee Change Forms (ECF), requisitions, assessment forms, etc. Prepares Administrative Separation letters advising bargaining unit and prepares termination ECFs.
  • Assists in scheduling and preparation for grievance hearings and post-hearing. May assist with formulating appropriate responses to grievances within a specific time frame as outlined in the labor agreement.
  • Inputs Disciplinary Action Forms and documents all grievance information.
  • Helps in the preparation for arbitration hearings and lawsuits.
  • Assists with research and support for labor negotiations. Assists with conducting surveys of other transit properties on wages, benefits, and special issues; compiles data.
  • Participates with Memorandum of Understandings (MOU) language, assists with preparation of MOUs, and assists in transfers of MOUs into the labor agreement as needed.
  • Assists with preparing training classes for bargaining unit managers and supervisors.
  • May assist in training classes for METRO personnel including assistants and bargaining unit managers, while emphasizing confidentiality.
  • Submits documents to Labor Relations relative to job bids, grievance hearings and arbitrations.
  • Assists in weekly new hire orientation for Union employees.
  • May be introduced to other Human Resources divisions.
  • Provides excellent customer service to METRO internal and external customers.
  • Applies SMS (Safety Management System) methods and principles in daily routine and supports all aspects of the agency’s Public Transportation Agency Safety Plan (PTASP).
  • Promotes safety awareness and follows safety procedures to reduce or eliminate accidents.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
