About The Position

This is a full-time summer internship with the potential to be extended full/part-time into the school year. Extensions will be reviewed regularly and will be determined based on the needs of the department and project scope. The internship may not exceed one year. This internship position will complete various tasks directly supporting the Aviation Environment & Sustainability Department at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA). This position will primarily focus on the green building program, with the potential to support other environmental and sustainability programs.

Requirements

  • A student – You must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or a recent graduate (< 1 year ago) in a degree program such as in environmental engineering, environmental sciences or related physical sciences.

Nice To Haves

  • General knowledge of Green Building rating systems (e.g. LEED, WELL), and an interest in pursuing professional credentials such as LEED Green Associate, Envision Sustainability Professional (SP), or WELL Accredited Professional.

Responsibilities

  • LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design – Track current projects actively working towards LEED certification. This includes attending project meetings, updating LEED scorecards, and writing technical memorandums to document credit applicability and potential for higher levels of certification.
  • Envision – Project manage implementation of SEA’s first-ever Envision pilot project. This entails coordinating with a wide range of Port of Seattle stakeholders and third-party consultants. Use these experiences to provide recommendations on future application of the Envision framework at SEA.
  • WELL – Conduct analysis and ongoing monitoring for SEA’s first-ever and WELL Gold Certified project. This includes air quality monitoring and occupant satisfaction and wellness evaluations. Use those results to identify lessons learned and recommendations for future application of the WELL program on SEA projects.
  • Research and provide recommendations on additional Green Building Certifications (e.g., Envision, Fitwel, Parksmart, etc.) to understand opportunities to integrate environmental performance within projects at SEA. A critical component of this will be researching LEED version 5 and identifying how SEA can document credits for the entire airport.
  • Conduct a gap analysis to identify which Green Building Certification requirements have been incorporated into Port of Seattle design standards. Identify additional opportunities to include green building language into standards and provide recommendations.
  • Support water conservation efforts at SEA. This may include review of SEA’s water utility infrastructure documents and data. Examples of projects include conservation opportunities through low-flow fixtures, irrigation, water reuse, and rainwater capture.
  • Support for other environmental compliance programs as requested, including stormwater, water resources, soils and remediation, hazardous waste, and construction management.
