About The Position

Reporting to the Assistant Collections Manager, the Collections Management Intern will learn about the day-to-day tasks performed by collections management staff and gain a greater knowledge of and hands-on experience working with all object types. The internship is at an offsite facility in Los Angeles County (not on LACMA’s main campus). LACMA’s encyclopedic collection includes over 154,000 artworks of all material types from all over the world and from all timespans. The collections management department is responsible for the preservation, storage, and organization of the art collection, and plays a critical role in providing access to the collection for LACMA staff and visiting scholars. This is a 13-week paid internship, approximately 14 hours per week at $17.87/hour. Anticipated Start Date: May 15, 2026

Requirements

  • Internship applicants must be currently enrolled in an academic program, or recently graduated within 1 year.

Nice To Haves

  • Completed coursework in Museum Studies, Collections Management, Art History, Conservation Science, Studio Art, Art Education, Library Science, Anthropology, or History is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Shadows Collections Management staff to gain hands-on experience in best practices for preservation and collections care
  • Assists with housing museum objects for storage and transit in accordance with institutional standards
  • Supports the monitoring and maintenance of collection storerooms
  • Learns and contributes to the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program
  • Tracks and updates object records in the collections management database (TMS) and work request system
  • Supports large-scale acquisition rehousing projects, including chemical labeling of artworks and data entry in TMS
