About The Position

Overview Responsible for operating a Medical Center Laboratory Collection Site including the ordering, collecting, labeling, and processing of samples to be sent to Medical Center Laboratory. Additional responsibilities include the collection of any related fees and the general upkeep of the facility, supervision of additional collection personnel (phlebotomists), and the coordination of non-MCL staff in the clinic involved in the collection process. The MCL Collection Site Coordinator is the MCL liaison between the Physician, who is both the client and MCL. Certification as a phlebotomist by a national certification board and/or EMT IV certified preferred or demonstrated competence in advanced medically related education and 1-year phlebotomy experience. This individual is under the supervision of the manager responsible for satellite operations. Incumbents are non-exempt employees and subject to call back by the department as designated by the hospital. Some reimbursement might be based on maintaining the account. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the lifespan and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the age-specific changes. Ages evaluated are neonate through geriatric.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or GED required.
  • Successful completion of phlebotomy certification examination or formal education as appropriate.
  • Skills and proficiency in the principles, concepts, and techniques required of an experienced phlebotomist.
  • 1-year phlebotomy experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification as a phlebotomist by a national certification board and/or EMT IV certified preferred or demonstrated competence in advanced medically related education.

Responsibilities

  • Handling any problems that occur with respect to the CLIA Certified Laboratory during the hours that he/she is on duty. These problems include any situations that may arise with the phlebotomy area or any situations reported by doctors, nurses, secretaries.
  • Collecting or assigning the collection of difficult draws.
  • Assisting with the training or additional training of staff.
  • Working with the manager of satellite laboratories in preparing the schedule. Typically the Collection Site Coordinator will prepare the schedule.
  • Assisting in preparing the 30, 60, 90 days, and the annual evaluations of any onsite MCL staff.
  • Printing labels (printing collection batches from LIS).
  • Equitably distributing work.
  • Organizing work.
  • Printing and checking an outstanding report periodically throughout the shift and especially before the end of the shift.
  • Preparing shipping batches to be sent to MCL
  • Preparing samples for transport to Medical Center Laboratory.
  • Performing venipunctures as necessary, while maintaining the overall Laboratory.
  • Consult with the manager of satellite laboratories concerning any staff member who may need additional training or counseling based upon the number of “unable to obtain” specimens or recollect requests.
  • Responsible for new employee training, assessment of competence of any staff.
  • Applies accurate identification and collection of specimens with respect to patient identity, appropriateness of specimen collection and preservation, and correct deliveries for effective handling.
  • Performance of CLIA Waived Testing as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.
