About The Position

The Ohio Attorney General's Office is currently seeking an experienced individual for a CODIS Evidence Intake Technician vacancy in the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) CODIS Section, London Ohio office. This position will report to the London location daily. The Bureau of Criminal Investigation, known as BCI, is the state's official crime lab serving the criminal justice community and protecting Ohio families. BCI also provides expert criminal investigative services to local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies upon request. With offices throughout the state, BCI stands ready to respond 24/7 to local law enforcement agencies' needs at no cost to the requesting agency. Staff at BCI work every day to provide the highest level of service. This includes special agents who are on call 24/7 to offer investigative assistance at crime scenes, knowledgeable scientists and forensic specialists using cutting-edge technology to process evidence to bring criminals to justice, and criminal intelligence analysts and identification specialists who help local law enforcement solve cases. Experienced special agents, forensic scientists, and other law enforcement experts' staff BCI's three main divisions: 1) Identifications 2) Investigations and 3) Laboratory.

Requirements

  • Formal education in arithmetic that includes calculating fractions, decimals & percentages & in reading, writing & speaking English
  • 12 months experience working in a forensic laboratory, biology, medical office laboratory or chemistry laboratory, law enforcement agency or legal environment
  • 6 months training or experience in inventory control (e.g. receiving, storing & dispensing of materials)
  • Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment noted above.

Responsibilities

  • Provides administrative support to the CODIS unit.
  • Processed offender samples received by mail/Fed-Ex and performs quality control checks. Verifies that the demographic information sheet matches the collected sample and ensures all paperwork is complete. Performs data entry of the offender sample information into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) in accordance with standard procedures. Transfers the filter paper portion of each sample to a new designated card storage system.
  • Reviews an offenders' criminal history to confirm qualifying offenses as defined by the Ohio Revised Code. Reviews expungement orders and determines whether offender samples should be removed from LIMS and the CODIS system in compliance with the Ohio Revised Code. Retrieves and prepares these samples and associated paperwork for destruction after DNA records are removed from CODIS by scientists.
  • Serves as a liaison with county, city, and state law enforcement agencies-including probation, parole, and correctional institutions-to respond to inquiries related to CODIS hits, sample submissions, recollection requests, DNA kit orders, and other CODIS-related matters via phone and e-mail.
  • Securely distributes completed DNA paternity reports to each county's Child Support Enforcement Agency. Securely distributes CODIS Hit Notifications to local, state, and national crime laboratories.
  • Uses a ladder to retrieve or file stored offender samples and the corresponding paperwork for retesting, in compliance with FBI quality assurance guidelines for CODIS laboratories. This includes verification of CODIS hit notifications and processing of familial cases.
  • Works on laboratory discovery requests by gathering case file information from the different section of the lab.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
