About The Position

RiverView Health, is a community owned, membership based non-profit organization that was formed in 1898 and continues to be the sole community hospital in Crookston, MN. RiverView Health operates a 25 bed Critical Access Hospital, RiverView Recovery Center; a chemical dependency outpatient treatment program, RiverView Home Care and five primary care and specialty clinics in the hospitals service area. The full-time (.8fte ) – The Hospital Coder is responsible for accurately assigning codes to diagnoses and procedures performed during a patient's hospital stay, utilizing classification systems such as ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT. As a Hospital Coder, you play a vital role in ensuring that every medical service a patient receives during their hospital stay is accurately documented and translated into universal healthcare codes. This role plays a critical part in the healthcare revenue cycle, ensuring proper reimbursement, accurate data for research and public health reporting, and compliance with all coding regulations and guidelines.

Requirements

Ability to acquire any one of the certifications listed below within 1 year of employment: RHIA - Registered Health Information Administrator, or RHIT - Registered Health Information Technician, or CPC - Certified Professional Coder CCA - Certified Coding Associate CCS - Certified Coding Specialist CCS-P - Certified Coding Specialist - Professional

Nice To Haves

Current certification in any of these areas: RHIA, RHIT, CPC, CCA, CCS, or CCS-P
2+ years previous of coding experience i.e. hospital in/outpatient
Associate or bachelor’s degree in health information management, Health Sciences, or related field
Collaboration and teamwork, supporting team goals and contributes positively.
Coding system proficiency through use of ICD coding platforms.
Good communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills.
Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to work independently.
Adaptability in coding guidelines, software and organizational processes.
Manages workload efficiently to meet productivity and quality targets.

Responsibilities

Abstracts pertinent information from patient records.
Assigns ICD-9/10 CM or HCPCS codes, for billing (both hospital and clinics) as appropriate.
Queries physicians when code assignments are not straightforward or documentation in the record is inadequate, ambiguous, or unclear for coding purposes.
Remains current with coding guidelines and reimbursement reporting requirements.
Brings identified concerns to Lead Coder or Director of HIM for resolution.
Abides by the Standards of Ethical Coding as set forth by the American Health Information Management Association and American Medical Association and adheres to official coding guidelines.
