About The Position

This position is responsible for using professional skills and knowledge to implement and coordinate regulatory enforcement of licensing of salvage yards, gaming establishments, public nuisances, and illegal dumping by providing inspections, permitting, and response to public complaints in the enforcement of laws, codes, orders, and regulations.

Requirements

  • Must have a high school diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
  • Must have at least one ( 1 ) year of related experience.
  • Must be a currently registered Code Enforcement Officer licensed by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR), or
  • Must register after 1 year of employment as a Code Enforcement Officer in Training with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) and become a registered Code Enforcement Officer within 1 year as an Officer in Training.
  • Knowledge of the principles and standards of Code Enforcement and local regulations.
  • Knowledge of computer programs and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Publisher).
  • Knowledge of proper safety practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge in reading and interpreting maps and/or plans; making accurate measurements and computations; and skill in recognizing deviations from drawings and specifications.
  • Skill in resolving problems or situations requiring the exercise of good judgment.
  • Must have satisfactory public relations and communication skills as necessary to adequately describe regulations or convey abstract ideas to the public.
  • Ability to use digital camera and personal laptop, desktop, and/or notebook computer.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing in the English language and orally in the Spanish language.
  • Must possess a valid and current Texas driver's license.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts inspections and investigations in a variety of settings (salvage yards and junkyards, gaming establishments, roads), to support the abatement of public nuisances, business licensing, and enforcement of county regulations.
  • Coordinates enforcement activities with the appropriate state and local agencies to initiate legal action when necessary (i.e., provides related case documentation and testimony as necessary), this position works closely with Justices-of-the Peace, County Attorney's Office, Constable Offices, and Sheriff's Department in the abatement of violations, issuance of violation notices/citations, provides testimony in court, etc.
  • Works closely with the County's Sanitarian and other departmental personnel in the coordination, development, and implementation of a comprehensive regulatory enforcement program.
  • Provides technical advice/consultation to recommend actions for improvement or compliance.
  • Conducts research for best practices and field changes.
  • Analyzes, prepares, and recommends local regulatory policies and regulations for consideration and possible adoption by the county.
  • Receives and investigates community complaints relating to duties and develops, generates, and submits incident reports.
  • Maintains program records, files, documents, and violation logs.
  • Performs any other duties as assigned.
