About The Position

The Code Enforcement Officer I is the entry level position on the CSG Code Enforcement career ladder that allows the incumbent to learn and develop code enforcement knowledge and abilities. Under general supervision, incumbents perform a variety of office and field tasks. These duties are to ensure compliance with State and local codes and regulations in support of a jurisdiction’s local code enforcement program. Officers will learn, reference and enforce a variety of applicable ordinances, codes, and regulations related to property maintenance, zoning and land use, nuisances, housing conditions, building and fire codes, health and public welfare, safety concerns, inoperable vehicles, business compliance, blight, graffiti, water waste, environmental or other neighborhood-related improvement issues, and other matters of public concern. They will serve as a resource and provide information on regulations to interested parties including property owners, tenants, businesses, the general public, other departments and divisions, and perform related work as assigned. Incumbents will conduct inspections of a more routine nature, learn jurisdictional policies, specific methods and techniques of inspection and code compliance work, all in alignment with industry standards. Employees at this level are not expected to perform with the same independence of discretion and judgment on matters allocated to the journey level. Since this class is typically used as an entry class, employees may have only limited related work experience. This position requires the ability to work independently on basic code enforcement duties, including the ability to learn and appropriately apply all relevant codes, demonstrate an increase in proficiency with basic computer literacy including database and case management, learn to prepare all necessary documentation, seek guidance on cases or matters requiring support, and consistently maintaining an appropriate and professional temperament for the workplace environment, and the ability to assist, collaborate as needed, and work effectively with all co-workers and the public. Positions in this class are filled and staffed by incumbents who have met the minimum qualifications, have or are working towards required certificates and training, have demonstrated a level of proficiency, and consistently display the ability to perform the responsibilities required.
