About The Position

Code Compliance Officer-Neighborhood Code 7:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. or 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. | Full-Time | Be the boots on the ground who protects neighborhoods, solves problems, and helps residents every day. The City of Fort Wayne is hiring a confident, fair, and service-minded professional to inspect properties, enforce housing and safety standards, and work directly with residents to keep our neighborhoods safe, clean, and compliant. This independent, field-based role is perfect for someone observant, detail-oriented, and comfortable having tough conversations with professionalism and respect.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Building Technology, Planning, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Experience in construction, inspections, enforcement, or property maintenance
  • Strong judgment, communication, and conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage a caseload
  • Indiana Driver's License
  • Special Police Commission (within 60 days)

Nice To Haves

  • Property Maintenance & Housing Inspector certification (ICC) within 6 months
  • Bilingual skills a plus
  • GIS, mobile technology, and digital documentation tools
  • Report writing and legal documentation
  • Knowledge of building systems (structural, electrical, mechanical, HVAC)

Responsibilities

  • Conduct inspections and enforce local housing, safety, and property maintenance codes across the city.
  • Inspect residential and commercial properties for code compliance
  • Investigate complaints, issue notices or citations, and follow cases through resolution
  • Maintain detailed reports, photos, and records using GIS and City systems
  • Educate residents and property owners on ordinances and corrective actions
  • Testify at hearings or court and coordinate with Police, Legal, and partner departments
