About The Position

The Town of Brookline Police Department is seeking a qualified Co-Response Clinician to perform professional clinical and crisis intervention services for individuals experiencing behavioral health emergencies. This position is embedded within the Police Department and co-responds with sworn officers to 911 and other calls for service. The Co-Response Clinician provides field-based clinical assessment, stabilization, referral, short-term crisis counseling, follow-up case management, and linkage to appropriate treatment and community resources. The role requires a high degree of professional judgment, the ability to function effectively in dynamic and high-stress environments, and the capacity to collaborate closely with law enforcement while maintaining appropriate clinical boundaries.

Requirements

  • Masters degree in Social Work, Counseling, Counseling Psychology, Rehabilitation Counseling, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of professional experience providing crisis intervention services in inpatient, outpatient, residential, or community-based settings.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing; multilingual skills strongly preferred.
  • Valid Massachusetts driver's license
  • Knowledge of crisis intervention practices, behavioral health assessment, short-term case management, and community-based referral systems.
  • Knowledge of applicable behavioral health laws, regulations, ethical standards, and confidentiality requirements.
  • Ability to provide effective clinical assessment and intervention in both office and field environments.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a law enforcement setting while maintaining professional clinical judgment and boundaries.
  • Ability to remain calm, professional, and decisive in high-stress and emergency situations.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, organizational, and time-management skills.
  • Proficiency with electronic records systems and standard office software.

  • The ideal candidate has experience serving youth and families in home-based or community settings, collaborating with law enforcement or criminal justice partners, and working effectively with diverse populations.

Responsibilities

  • Co-responds with police officers to 911 calls and other community crises involving behavioral health concerns; conducts clinical assessments and assists with stabilization and referrals.
  • Provides immediate crisis intervention, short-term crisis counseling, and follow-up case management services as appropriate.
  • Coordinates referrals and linkages to behavioral health treatment, social services, and community-based resources for individuals and families.
  • Maintains accurate, timely, and confidential clinical documentation, data entry, and records in accordance with program and departmental requirements.
  • Develops and maintains working relationships with police personnel, hospitals, courts, social service agencies, and other municipal departments.
  • Represents the co-response program at community meetings, task forces, trainings, and public presentations as assigned.
  • Provides consultation and guidance to police personnel and community partners regarding behavioral health response strategies.
  • Participates in Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) meetings, partner meetings, and stakeholder meetings as required.
  • Attends supervision, staff meetings, and required clinical and professional development trainings; maintains required licensure.
  • Adheres to all Police Department policies, clinical standards, safety protocols, and confidentiality requirements.
  • Remains alert throughout scheduled shifts and follows the direction of the police supervisor on duty during field responses.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
  • Performs similar or related work as required, directed or as situation dictates.
