General Electric Aerospace (GEA) is a leader in the industrialization of ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) for the manufacture of military and commercial jet engines. CMC’s are a technological breakthrough in advanced materials that enables a revolutionary change in the engine’s fuel efficiency, performance and emissions through lower density and fuel burn at increased temperature. GEA’s commitment to the development of CMC technology began in 2001 and has reached realization in 2016 with first deliveries of the LEAP engine for commercial narrow body airliners. Orders for LEAP, which features a CMC shroud component, have now reached 40,000 in number, reflecting the success of this product. GEA’s commitment to the implementation of CMC technology continues with the GE9X engine, the first commercial engine to incorporate multiple CMC components. The first flight powered by GE9X engines was completed in January of 2020. These examples are just the beginning for the opportunities that CMC’s create to transform the aviation industry and GEA is positioned to play a lead role in that revolution. The CMC Forming Process Engineering Manager will lead a team of engineers that are responsible for supporting the composite layup and thermal operations that are used to support the manufacturing of Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMC’s) in Asheville, NC.
