About The Position

This position is funded by the CLSD federal grant, awarded to NMPED in 2024, with funding dependent upon congressional appropriation each year. The District Literacy Coordinator (DLC) will serve one local educational agency (LEA) to support comprehensive literacy teaching and learning systems. This includes supporting HQIM implementation, MLSS systems, literacy coaching, professional development, and materials purchase and alignment. The DLC will work on site within the district/s they serve.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5 or more years of experience in K-12 education.
  • Level 2 or 3 NM teaching license.
  • Completion of LETRS and/or AIM Pathways training.
  • Strong grounding in structured literacy.
  • Strong understanding of HQIM and literacy intervention based on the MLSS model.
  • Knowledge of effective ways to support school professionals and of common barriers to implementation effective literacy instruction.
  • Ability to develop, conduct and evaluate relevant and effective district literacy implementation plans.
  • Knowledge of summative and interim assessments in NM.
  • Understanding of best practices for adult learning.
  • Capacity to work independently, maintain multiple responsibilities, and work under deadline pressure.
  • Ability to create and sustain a collaborative approach in the workplace, on external committees and in the community.
  • Ability to delegate tasks as appropriate and define responsibilities.
  • Creative, resourceful, and forward thinking with strong problem-solving, leadership, and analytical skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and ability to make information accessible for a variety of audiences.
  • Ability and willingness to adapt to and support an evolving work environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Email usage.

  • Master’s degree in education with a focus on literacy.
  • Reading Endorsement and/or administrators license.
  • Teaching experience in grades K-12.
  • Instructional coaching experience in grades K-12.
  • Experience as a school or district administrator.
  • Experience providing professional development to teachers and administrators.
  • Experience developing and/or advocating for effective instructional practices.

Responsibilities

  • Lead alignment of district literacy practices to the state literacy approach by conducting a district literacy Needs Assessment to identify the highest needs schools, address student needs and outline how evidence-based practices and professional development will be implemented.
  • Support the creation and/or refinement of the K-12 District Literacy Plan using change models.
  • Oversee the monitoring and continuous improvement of district literacy outcomes.
  • Ensure that CLSD funding is used in accordance with the parameters of the grant.
  • Support and supervise one to three literacy coaches (who will provide in-person coaching for general education teachers, special education teachers, and reading interventionists), as well as collaborate with the school’s instructional coaches, as determined by data review and needs assessment.
  • Allocate grant funding for professional development and /or materials based on the district Literacy Needs Assessment.
  • Facilitate literacy PD, including in the strategies recommended in the IES Practice Guides and in use of assessments to plan instruction and intervention. Communities of Practice and other NMPED required training.
  • Meet at least monthly with the Director of Instruction or Superintendent regarding the district literacy plan and its implementation.
  • Attend all district literacy team meetings.
  • Attend and support school-based PLCs.
  • Attend all training for CLSD District Literacy-Coordinators.
  • Support and prepare for CLSD site monitoring visits from NMPED and the US Department of Education.
  • Adhere to all CLSD compliance, reporting and evaluation requirements at the federal and state level.
  • Adhere to all grant implementation processes, procedures, and expectations.
  • Adhere to CLSD statutory requirements and work only on CLSD related work.
  • Keep work logs as necessary for documentation of CLSD activities.
  • Be the district contact person with the REC and NM PED.
