About The Position

The Clinical Veterinary Fellow provides high-quality clinical care within the Small Animal Emergency Service of the Animal Health Center and supports advanced care for critically ill patients in the Small Animal Intensive Care Unit (ICU). This is a service-oriented, entry-level clinical position designed to support recent graduates, with structured mentoring and professional development provided. This position is a 2-year time-limited position. The Fellow plays a key role in delivering emergency and critical care services, collaborating with clinical faculty and staff to enhance patient outcomes, and contributing to a high standard of client and referring veterinarian service. The position also supports the teaching mission of the College through direct supervision and instruction of veterinary and veterinary technician students.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from a college accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Council on Education.
  • Eligibility for veterinary licensure in the State of Mississippi.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Knowledge of small animal emergency and critical care principles, including triage, stabilization, and acute case management.
  • Ability to perform clinical assessments, diagnostic procedures, and implement appropriate treatment plans.
  • Strong clinical reasoning and decision-making skills in fast-paced, high-acuity environments.
  • Effective communication skills with clients, students, faculty, and referring veterinarians.
  • Ability to prioritize workload and manage multiple cases while maintaining high standards of care.
  • Skill in teaching, mentoring, and supervising veterinary and veterinary technician students in a clinical setting.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary clinical team and contribute to service improvement.
  • Ability to maintain accurate medical records and adhere to clinical, safety, and regulatory standards.

Responsibilities

  • Provide primary care to patients presenting to the Small Animal Emergency Service.
  • Participate in the management of critically ill patients in the Small Animal ICU.
  • Perform primary and secondary case management, including diagnostics, treatment planning, and case follow-up.
  • Deliver emergency medical care in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment.
  • Consult and communicate effectively with private practitioners regarding referred and emergency cases.
  • Collaborate with faculty clinicians and other veterinary staff to ensure continuity and quality of care.
  • Provide clinical instruction and mentorship to senior veterinary students and veterinary technician students.
  • Supervise student participation in patient care to ensure high standards of clinical practice.
  • Support a positive learning environment that promotes student engagement and skill development.
  • Promote a high level of client service and professionalism in all interactions.
  • Participate in efforts to enhance operational efficiency, patient care protocols, and service quality.
