About The Position

A Clinical Pastoral Care resident or (CPE resident) is a person admitted into and participating in a yearlong Clinical Pastoral Education Program under supervision as developed by Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) Inc. The individual provides pastoral care and spiritual support to patients, staff, and families as well as other job functions as assigned.

Requirements

  • At least Three months functioning in a spiritual ministry role
  • Completion of 1 unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) through ACPE and a commitment to completing the 4 units of Residency CPE.
  • Bachelor’s degree, and completion of at least one unit of ACPE CPE experience.
  • Fluent in English.
  • Knowledge and skill in dealing with spiritual dynamics of illness, loss, and death.
  • Ability to function as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Strong interpersonal, teamwork, and communication skills.
  • Commitment to professional growth and development, ecumenical openness to working in a pluralistic setting.
  • Computer proficiency

Nice To Haves

  • Graduate degree in theology or related field from an accredited seminary or theological school is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in all aspects of the training program according to ACPE and OLOL standards, which includes entering into meaningful learning and ministry relationships that exhibit professionalism and openness to learning.
  • Works with a variety of faith traditions and assigned institutional populations to ensure spiritual care that meets ethical and professional standards for ministry in the healthcare setting.
  • Performs systematic compiling of pastoral care data for department reports and research.
  • The CPE resident develops and implements a plan of care to promote patient well-being and continuity of care and facilitates the expression of the patient's spiritual practices.
  • The CPE resident models and collaborates with the organization and its interdisciplinary team in respecting and providing culturally competent patient-centered care.
  • The CPE resident ministers to all person regardless of faith, race, affiliation, or orientation.
  • The CPE resident provides pastoral care to the organization in ways consistent with the organization's values and mission statement.
  • The CPE resident presides at memorial services and other special services.
  • The CPE resident provides timely and sensitive pastoral care to the organization's staff via individual and group interactions.
  • The CPE resident facilitates crisis debriefings, provides pastoral care for unit services and special events.
  • The CPE resident assumes responsibility for continued professional development, demonstrates a working and current knowledge of current theory and practice, and integrates such information into practice.
  • The CPE resident practices evidence-based care including ongoing evaluation of new practices and when appropriate, contributes to or conducts research.
  • Demonstrates the ability to teach and educate through articulating and intergrading current research of best practice.
